Billy Kenny has captured our hearts over the past couple of years with his crazy, towering hair and classic overalls outfit dancing across the stage. He is one of those artists that is so unique with his approach, yet totally down to Earth outside of the spotlight that it’s unforgettable, unparalleled, and refreshing.
The Leeds native has quickly risen to the top list of artists on the Dirtybird and This Ain’t Bristol Record labels, with his remix of Claude VonStroke’s “Barrump“ and original single “Work“ putting him on the map. Recently, Kenny has been struggling to make it back for booked shows and festivals for the upcoming season, and all we have to say is #SaveBillyKenny.
Even with this roadblock, the young producer hasn’t let it stop him from releasing new music to his fans. Luckily we can bide our time with his new EP The Grind/Trippy out on Solardo’s Sola Records, the label responsible for sporting incredible releases from Sonny Fodera, Eli Brown, and Hauswerks.
He had this to say about The Grind/Trippy EP:
I hope you lot enjoy these records as much as I did making them! Had cabin fever after cancelling those U.S. shows and these were the first one’s I finished off. The titles are somewhat reflective of my situation right now since the Trip to Europe and back got me in trouble and now I’m Grinding over here! Other than the female saying “trip” in Trippy, which is actually my girlfriend, all the vocals are my own. This is the beginning of what I’d like to call a slightly more mature direction in my sound.
Each track definitely reflects this change of course, with the first drawing you in and the latter giving the EP that special pop.
“The Grind” kicks off with a flashy high hat and catchy vocal on repeat that definitely gets you moving. The bass line underneath draws us in and then the monologue takes over, reminding us fanatics that music and our friends are what really makes us happy and the DJ is there to provide.
“Trippy” takes on a bubbly, yet seductive take on tech house. The bass and the wavering synth melodies perfectly blend that dark mood with the upbeat nature of dance music.
While his next performance in the U.S. is still up in the air, this EP reminds us that no matter what, we can connect through music and Kenny always pushes to give back to his fans any way he can. The Grind/Trippy EP is a refreshing mix that will have you coming back for more.
