The overwhelming thought of the week: corporate and labels have caught on strong to streaming curation in 2016. With tools like SoundCloud charts and Spotify playlists, it’s easy to find what is hot in the long and short term. Powerful Picks provides a blend of great energetic music from the big and small guys.
Everything is becoming a hybrid, new sub-genres, such as bass house, trapstep, and more, are taking sharing and are super club friendly. The DJ landscape is getting even more competitive. With that said, dive into sounds that we are jiving to this week, from all corners of the heavy dance spectrum.
Kaptain – When The Sky Shimmers
This is one of the best mixtures of electronic and instruments I’ve heard in a while, shout out to the guitarist Brizzy. With a trippy Pretty Lights feel..except better – Kaptain delivers “When The Sky Shimmers” a perfect balance of glitch, funk, soul, and bass. This tune is the lead single off of Kaptains EP called “When The Sky Shimmers” which drops at the end of the month – can’t wait to hear the full roster.
Zoogma – Molasses
Zoogma’s latest EP Molasses combines the jam band sound with modern electronic. Of the 4 tunes on the EP. “Molasses” still tops out as my favorite. The drop isn’t overwhelming, yet still comes in strong with highly creative sound design and a great feeling all around. 2016 is going to be a big year from Zoogma, I can feel it.
JACE MEK – Whales
Released via Tchami’s label Confession: JACE MEK makes an original that’s simplistic, but trippy. The 18-year-old LA based artist has paired some interesting artwork with the release, to say the least. The experience of single is original from start to finish.
Haywyre – Do You Don’t You
Haywyre, who is also playing Backwoods Music Festival this year, has dropped something more for the insomniac enthusiast. A bass-house-esque emotion combined with quick lead synths, powerful drums, and unique vocal samples forms “Do You Don’t You.” Two Fold Pt. 2 ,Haywyre’s new EP, is set to come out next week, “Do You Don’t You,” teases what the overall vibe will contain.
Rozes – Burn Wild (Young Bombs Remix)
One of my favorite new groups taking off in 2016. Young Bombs has this particular sound they’re able to deliver well. A vibe with a wide spectrum, ranging from uplifting to melancholy (major and minor) chord progressions. The duo clearly know what they’re doing and have a signature sound already. “Burn Wild (Young Bombs Remix)” is my favorite to date.
DJ Punish – To The Top
With Diplo-esque horns blaring, “To The Top” is harder than most of the tunes on the list. Released on Party Squad’s label, Rebel Yard, the single flex’s DJ Punish’s electro/trap/reggae style – stacked full of energy, rhythm, and dope party vibe.
Justin Beiber – Sorry (PatrickReza Remix)
This tune is in it’s own league when it comes to “Sorry” remixes. It’s definitely a bass track, but the angle Patrick comes at the percussion and melody is what makes this tune stand out. “Sorry (PatrickReza Remix)” is one of the most experimental, yet fitting remixes of the tune I’ve heard yet.
