Madison Square Garden is widely recognized as the “Mecca” of entertainment venues. Ask any athlete or artist about their career highlights, and surely they will mention a vintage performance at “The Garden”.
More recently, dance music acts have broken down the stadium barriers to produce spectacles for EDM fans and people who simply love live shows.
Below, we revisit the short list of epic dance music shows that made their mark on the historic venue.
1. Swedish House Mafia – December 16, 2011
One of the most popular acts in the history of dance music, Swedish House Mafia was the first EDM headliner to perform and sell-out Madison Square Garden. The show was defined by Steve Angello’s famous words, “We put a night club inside Madison Square Garden!”
2. A State of Trance 600 – March 30, 2013
Led by one of the most beloved DJ’s in the world, Armin van Buuren celebrated the 600th episode of his “A State of Trance” radio show in the big apple.
As the only EDM event of 2013 at M.S.G., Armin brought with him a stellar cast of Alex M.O.R.P.H., W&W, Ferry Corsten, and Markus Schulz.
3. Armin Only: Intense – April 11, 2014
Kicking off the first EDM show of 2014 at “The Garden”, Armin dropped a 5-hour set and brought his world tour setup to commemorate his album “Intense”.
4. Eric Prydz – September 27, 2014
Eric Prydz admits that he loses money on each “EPIC” show he does. His “EPIC 3.0” show at Madison Square Garden didn’t sell out to full capacity, but that’s not truly the point.
The real agenda was to show that he can outperform any DJ on the world’s biggest stage, and with “EPIC 3.0”, many believe he did just that.
5. Bassnectar: Basscenter VIII – October 4, 2014
While he still gets disrespected by international DJ polls, it’s hard to deny that Bassnectar is a phenomenon. Consistently selling out arenas worldwide over the last few years, Lorin “The Bassmaster” brought his annual “Basscenter” show to an absolutely packed house of New York bassheads.
On this night, the Bassgod brought an all-star supporting cast of Paper Diamond, Rusko, and Big Gigantic.
6. Above & Beyond: Group Therapy 100 – October 18, 2014
Above & Beyond’s worldwide following is as large as any artist’s in all of EDM. Their “Trance Around The World” radio show was one of the longest running dance music radio shows, until they ended the format in November of 2012.
On November 10, 2012, “Group Therapy” radio was born — sparking a new cult of fans. In celebration of their 100th episode of Group Therapy, A&B sold out “The Garden” with support from Ilan Bluestone, Andew Bayer, and Mat Zo.
7. Hardwell: I AM HARDWELL – November 15, 2014
Hardwell’s explosive rise to the top of EDM has been unreal. The Tïesto protégé concluded his year and a half long “I AM HARDWELL” world tour in front of a sold out crowd at M.S.G.
8. Skrillex & Diplo: NYE 2014 – December 31, 2014
Following the disappointing cancelation of their set at New York’s Electric Zoo festival, Skrillex and Diplo promised something special for NYC, and they delivered: a New Year’s Eve performance at Madison Square Garden.
Arguably the two “most wanted” figures in American music, M.S.G. looks to close out a tremendous 2014 campaign with a bang.
