From the mind of John D Robbins, Run DMT is a veteran bass artist that has aided in redefining the future of dubstep since his emergence in 2009. Now, Robbins is voyaging on the next phase of his musical journey with the launch of his new alias deemster. To kick off this project, deemster has dropped his inaugural EP, Topsail.
Sharing his thoughts on the compilation and his identity as deemster, this talented artist says, “this record is a love letter to the place where I live and to the kind of music that got me interested in producing in the first place. This project is also a reflection of my love for cinema, as I approach each record like a director approaches a film, where style and atmosphere dictate the creative direction rather than a specific genre. This record is a collection of vibes that have lived in my head rent-free since I was a teenager; trip hop, jungle, breaks, etc were the soundtrack to most of my life and I am thrilled to lay them out on a single project. The deemster project is where my heart is.”
Topsail is a five-track auditory adventure, with each track bringing unique soundscapes and intriguing blends of genre to the table. While “The Fisherman” fuses together a retro funk with wonky progressions, “Ebb” emulates a cinematic vibe with its soothing vocal echoes and gentle wave-like tones. The other parts of Topsail are just as captivating, shining a spotlight on deemster’s wild imagination when it comes to production. This monumental EP foreshadows an exciting year for the innovative deemster.
