Great North Festival has a promotion team that greatly values diversity, booking everything from Grateful Dead cover bands to heavy dubstep and bass music. Alongside the music, Great North also put great effort into booking a visual artist lineup (which was released last week) that will give the festival a character like no other. There are countless names on the lineup to be excited about, but here at RaverRafting.com we thought we’d illuminate a few who are guaranteed to rock our world.
Rob Garza
Thievery Corporation is known worldwide for their unique brand of downtempo music, which blends worldly sounds with crisp beats and beautiful arrangements. When not writing with his partner, member Rob Garza works on developing his solo sound, which is rooted in house music, while still incorporating the same laid back and international influences of his downtempo work. Deep house and nu-disco are also important influences for Rob Garza, as seen in the mix linked below.
Supersillyus
Even in the psychedelic music realm, there are very few artists that put as much care as Supersillyus into the emotional journey their music takes you through, as well as the picture it paints in your mind. Very few songs by the playful producer dip below 6 minutes, as each tune is meant to be an experience in itself, which makes it even more intriguing to see how he will string them together in a full set. As if that wasn’t enticing enough, Supersillyus will actually be performing TWO sets during Great North, one DJ set, and one set with a full live band…it’ll be very interesting to see how they differ, hopefully we’ll get some tasty treats from his side project Schlang (with Space Jesus) as well.
Cut Chemist
While festival-goers come from a wide variety of musical backgrounds, Great North Festival recognizes that a large portion of them unite under a love for hip-hop. Jurassic 5 is one of the most well known “underground” hip-hop collectives in the past 20 years, and Cut Chemist is the turn-table genius from their midst. As a solo artist he shows off his rapid and clean style of scratching over a collection of crisp hand produced beats which feature a variety of carefully picked samples. It might sound strange for us to be promoting him on a EDM focused website, but if there’s one thing that all ravers can appreciate, it is a clean, well put together set, which is exactly what Cut Chemist brings every time.
Jade Cicada
Jade Cicada is somewhat of an anomaly; with his soundcloud being filled almost entirely with short clips of unreleased tracks, he seems to have gathered most of the buzz about himself purely with the reputation he creates with live performances. He was one of the most renowned sets at this year’s Tipper & Friends Gathering in Florida, and over the last few months he has had a steady run playing small festivals shows. His music itself is diverse, but always complex and unique; he never really makes the same song or sound twice, but at the same time it feels like he has complete control over what he’s doing.
Tsimba
Brooklyn based producer Tsimba has been popping off this past year, opening for such artists as G Jones, Clozee, and fellow Great North artist Of The Trees. Great North veterans may remember Tsimba from when he played a secret b2b set last year with Funk A. This year the artist will return on the official lineup, bringing with him his unique style of rhythmic and psychedelic bass, as well a handful of fresh remixes and unreleased tunes.
