Following the debut of his January EP that released via Lowly, Under The Light Of A Dying Moon, Hex Cougar has been teasing something new in the works: a short film that accompanies the soundtrack of his EP. After being on the edge of our seats for months, the final project is finally revealed, and it’s stunning. When conceptualizing the short film, Hex Cougar wanted to create a unique and in-depth world for his soundscapes to live in and for his fans to thrive in. To fully translate Hex Cougar’s notions into a cinematic masterpiece, the project was shot by three-time Emmy winning cinematographer Matthew Halla and produced with the help of Kurk Kasparian. Production houses involved include FWD Future and Void Productions. With all of these powerhouses working on the film, it’s no wonder it’s so cutting edge.
Comfortably sitting below the 10 minute mark, the film stars Sumi Oshima, most notably from So You Think You Can Dance, Young Thug, A Tribe Called Quest, etc. Through the piece, she is attempting to escape an attacker, who is portrayed by Tim Neff from Westworld, The Irishman, American Horror Story, and more. Each scene is dedicated to a song off the EP, thematically represented by the elements and culminating in a brilliant, VFX-enhanced summoning ritual. Instead of spelling out the exact message for viewers to understand, Hex Cougar leaves things open ended for the viewer to interpret independently. In order to allow listeners to fully immerse themselves within the piece, abstract thoughts are encouraged and welcomed to accompany the trippy and abstract visual designs.
“This film encapsulating the full EP takes that idea a step further, illustrating a literal world that my characters journey through – in this case, it’s the story of one girl being chased by a mysterious dark force and how she overcomes it. It’s a story that I think most people can relate to: being haunted by your past and struggling to come to terms with it.” –Hex Cougar
