This past weekend, music lovers reunited in Pasadena, CA for the 2nd edition of the Just Like Heaven music festival. With it’s inception in Long Beach in 2019, Just Like Heaven took a 2 year break but came back in full force with an expansion to the beautiful Brookside Golf Course at the Rose Bowl. This year’s headliners included legendary rock band Interpol, who closed out the Orion Stage, and the beautiful British Rapper, M.I.A who closed out the Stardust Stage with a brand new song that will be releasing later this week.
M.I.A. performed an electrifying set filled with lights, lasers, and even a children’s choir! She performed all of her hits from “Bad Girls” to “Paper Planes”. And she ended her set by premiering a brand new song with her baby choir called, “The One”, which will be releasing on 5/27. Although this was her first performance in almost 4 years, she seemed to really be enjoying herself on stage alongside her choir and amazing backup dancers.
Canadian electro-funk duo, Chromeo, had the entire festival grooving and dancing at the Stardust stage. Right before they got on, the crowd was screaming in unison “Chromeo-oh oh” in anticipation of the duo coming out to perform. Dave 1 and P-Thugg played a magnificent set, playing their classics like “Fancy Footwork” and “Bonafied Lovin”. Unfortunately their set got cut a little short, but that didn’t stop the good vibes of the crowd.
Legendary Swedish rock band, The Hives, performed an earlier set on the Orion Stage, performing all of their greatest hits like “Hate To Say I Told You So” and “Tick Tick Boom”. The crowd exploded with laugher as the frontman, Howlin’ Pelle Almqvist took the mic to say “Welcome to the greatest festival of 2005!” Howlin’ Pelle showcased his amazing energy as a frontman, as he dove into the crowds and roamed around the whole stage.
Scottish rock legends, Franz Ferdinand thrilled music lovers of new-wave British indie rock, performing all of their hits sprinkled with a couple tracks from their newest album Hits To The Head, which released earlier this year. They played hits like “The Dark Of The Matinee” and “Tell Her Tonight” before ending their performance with their fan favorite “Take Me Out”.
It’s been a little while since fans have heard from Santigold, so we were super excited to catch the versatile artist’s set. She opened her set with fan favorite “L.E.S. Artistes” as she came out in a beautiful white dress, in between her amazing backup dancers and vocalists. She even premiered her newest single, “High Priestess”, a new rap punk track that released last week.
We had a wonderful time at Just Like Heaven this past weekend! The logistics were amazing all around and each set was nostalgic and beautifully crafted. We hope this festival comes back year after year. We hope to see you next year!
