Justin Jay continues to make moves on his funkalicious journey with his latest single “Stuck Inside My Head.” For those of you unfamiliar, this ever-so-talented DJ and producer began his career in his dorm room in college and, in no time at all, caught the attention of Dirtybird father, Claude VonStroke. After joining the family, Justin Jay’s skills began receiving massive support from the likes of heavy hitters Jamie James, Disclosure, and Pete Tong. These experiences eventually manifested themselves into his 2016 Fantastic Voyage album, which has since coalesced into a label, supporting a freewheeling ecosystem Jay and friends created around their musical undergrad program at USC. This label has seen the release of many up-and-comers, like Dirtybird staple Ardalan’s hit “All Night Long.” But one of our favorite fun facts about this LA native is this tidbit: Justin Jay graduated USC in 2015, but gave back his diploma to study extra music classes. The last two years have seen his home base play host to raucous house parties featuring the likes of Skrillex, Justin Martin and Desert Hearts, as well as bossa nova bands, ravers, drum squads and indie-psych rockers. Pretty dope, right?
His latest release “Stuck Inside My Head,” is one we’ve been waiting for. We were lucky enough to get a preview of this track during his set at Elements Lakewood back in May, and we must say, it was a wild and wacky treat, especially once Justin Jay took to the microphone to low-key belt out the lyrics. Out now on Fantastic Voyage, this lo-fi track was written, recorded, and produced by the label head himself. Justin Jay’s vocals are set atop an easygoing, funky beat, gifting us a tune that’s soulful and strangely entrancing. He achieved its sound with an iPhone recording and vocal processing effect rack which he created in logic; this processing-chain has since become a staple in his live show.
