Accent, The Crusher, Dinky Dog, Size 9, Wink, Winx, or Josh Wink are many of the names that Josh Winkelman goes by. The techno/house/electronica/whatever-he-invents-next boss has been at it since the 90s as a DJ, Producer, along with co-founding Ovum Records along with King Britt in 1994, and has been the label opener since 2001 when Britt stepped down. Ovum has been going strong for almost 23 years, with releases from artists such as Loco Dice, DJ Sneak, Alexkid, Technasia, KiNK, Tom Middleton, and dozens more.
If you’ve known Josh since he first got started, then you know his classics including house standard “Higher Than Consciousness (Original Tweekin Acid Funk Mix)” as Josh Wink:
Or the dark techno “Don’t Laugh” as Winx:
His tracks include a wide range of experimental music that may not always seem to fit perfectly into a genre, which is a great part of the appeal. Frank Broughton in 1996 during a Rolling Stone interview went to say:
A Josh Wink record takes a series of sampled noises, then twists and warps them through a barrage of sound processors, resulting in a spiraling blend of acidic bass lines and trippy break beats.
Whether it’s funky effects, experimenting with filters, or samples that include creepy laughter and mystery, Josh Wink knows how to grab your attention and have you wanting more.
