UPDATE 6/6/13: Listen to “Brain in a Fishtank” off Museum of Consciousness below, and pre-order the album now!
Simon Posford, better known by his stage name Shpongle, has been hard at work the past few months working on his 5th album, which via his facebook appears to be named “The Museum of Consciousness”. So far, we know that he has been working extensively with Raja Ram, a member of the Shpongle collective.
If you are unfamiliar with the group, the two produce a brand of music dubbed “psybient”, which combines many genres, such as world music, psychedelic trance, ambient, electronic, and much more. The duo produces the music themselves, while Posford is the main contributor and also performs live as a DJ. On rare occasions, Shpongle, as a group, will perform full-sensory, psychedelic live instrumentation sets, which include Raja Ram, amongst others.
We have learned today that the album is finished, and now is being mastered before release. Posford has said this will take about two months, placing the album’s release around July (we will update when a release date is announced). While Posford has hinted at many track titles, the only confirmed track to this date is “The Aquatic Garden of Extra-Celestial Delights.”
If this gives us any indication, this will be an album filled with psychedelic bliss that Shpongle is so perfect at creating. The album is currently being mastered by The Soundmasters, an analog mastering studio based in West London, who have mastered for producers such as Squarepusher, Bonobo, and Orbital.
“This album filled with so much LOVE…. can we finish it in two weeks??? If the Goddess smiles upon us….” – Simon Posford via Facebook
Posford and Raja Ram have been hyping this album for a while, through Facebook and other mediums, such as some peculiar videos. Recent performances of Shpongle, such as at Red Rocks Amphitheater for the Feed the Rocks event, gives me an idea that this may be a more electronically-infused album. Shpongle has always utilized electronic elements very well, which work effectively in his tracks, however this album may show even more of that. He only has two confirmed tour dates this summer, at Wakarusa Music Festival and Cascadia Soulstice.
When the album is released, it will be available digitally, as well as a limited supply of CDs and vinyl copies. Posford has also stated it will contain a booklet, and other “collectible stuff.” The cover of the album will be a 3D lenticular hologram, multicoloured, and “Shpongley”, as Posford put it. This is a unique but very fitting approach for Shpongle, as they always seem to be very progressive yet true to their original style. Stay tuned as more information for this album soon is released.
