BBC Radio 1’s Essential Mix – Fatima Yamaha (9/9/2017)
We’re going to start the series with a BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix from a month ago. Bas Bron is a unique figure who performs under many aliases. He is most famous as Bastian, but he also plays as Seymour Bits, Gifted, Comtron, Dubbel B and Major Vlosshart: de Neger Des Heils.
The reason we are here today is for a completely different alias that he has used sporadically. Fatima Yamaha first appeared in 2004 with an EP named “A Girl Between Two Worlds”. The last track (What’s A Girl To Do) is a classic “you have heard the song a million times in sets and mixes, but don’t know the actual name of the song”. Only after getting the massive support of Jackmaster and Hudson Mohawke (on his Essential Mix no less), he started releasing music under the alias again ten years later.
Yamaha’s Essential Mix is a rambling adventure through a bunch of different genres. He starts with an off the wall and wacky intro which truly sets you up for what’s in store. He sets the stage early with some upbeat (if a little strange) house. He progressively gets deeper and darker while throwing in some acid house to keep you off kilter. Finally, when you’re at the bottom of a pit with the music bearing down on you, he lightens the mood and brings on a combination of synth pop and funk. After a heavy dose of music that puts you a few decades back, Fatima Yamaha drops you into some heavy techno. To wrap up this hectic and confusing mix, he brings back… you guessed it, MORE SYNTHS. As your head stops spinning and you start to catch your breath, you can hear the familiar voice of Mr. Pete Tong to let you know that you made it through intact.

Bas Bron will be performing as Fatima Yamaha at the Warehouse Project in Manchester in November. His most recent release was an EP called Araya, which was released on Dekmantle Records in February of this year, you can find it on Spotify.
