With Derek Vincent Smith, better known as Pretty Lights, having recently been consumed with the coming release of his album “A Color Map of the Sun”, it’s a wonder he had time to work on any new material at all. However, the man of many genres proves that he is taking no down time as he recently produced “All These Lights” for rappers The Grouch & Eligh. Pretty Lights showcases his feel for hip-hop as he produced the instrumentals for the track, incorporating his own electro-soul signatures but making the track perfect for The Grouch & Eligh’s rap verses to shine over it.
If you’ve listened to “A Color Map of the Sun”, you may recognize the opening chorus line, “Let’s Get Busy/ Come on, who’s with me?” from his song off the album, entitled “Let’s Get Busy”. The video is really interesting, using stop-motion to portray the rappers flowing through the city. Their clothes change, the locations change, however the rappers themselves stay in the same standing position, singing the songs in tune with the video as well. I can only imagine the amount of time and work put into making this video, but the work surely paid off as this is one of the most original and creative videos I have seen in some time. Not to mention, Pretty Lights bluesy rock-hop instrumentals with The Grouch & Eligh make for an awesome song. Check out the video below.
