Arizona quartet Spafford is carving out a space for themselves in the wide world of livetronica with the release of their record, “Abaculus: An Improvisational Experience.” Improv is a practice that is inseparable if not synonymous with jam music, but immortalizing a one hour experimental session on wax is a power-move that can go either one of two ways. In Spafford’s case, Abaculus stands as proof of the undeniable chemistry between band members Brian Moss (guitar/vocals), Jordan Fairless (bass/vocals), Andrew “Red” Johnson (keys/vocals), and Cameron Laforest (drums/percussion/vocals). For 1 hour and 20 seconds, the band takes listeners on an intense and funk filled journey riding out melodies and rhythmic grooves until they come to a natural end. Each member skillfully layers sound on top of each other while also knowing exactly when to pull back and let someone else take the lead. Bouncing piano artfully intros to ripping guitar solos, and Laforest knows when to take charge on percussion to lead the group into new realms of sound. Spafford’s release has the power to turn slow close-eyed head nods into uncontrollable dance parties over and over again, and we can’t wait to hear what comes next.
