I’m not going to sugar coat it. To say that I wasn’t slightly irritated in July 2021 by Swedish House Mafia (SHM) annoucing their return would be a lie. After traveling to both Chicago on February 20, 2013 and April 2, 2013 to Brooklyn for their One Last Tour events (both were amazing), I was emotionally, and financially, done with SHM. The hype was immense, and I had for the next eight years accepted that there wouldn’t be any more SHM tracks, until July 2021 when they announced their return.
While to this day, I’m still a bit irritated that perhaps it was just a marketing ploy, eight years is a long time for SHM to be broken up. People change, attitudes change, and we all know how the world has changed since 2020 when the pandemic changed us all.
Today, I gave SHM another chance, and was happy that I did.
The 17 track album Paradise Again includes tracks each with their own vibe, or energy, however they all carry a darkness. Whether it is by the bellowing vocals, or the dark and brooding builds of some interlude tracks, the dance/electro-pop album carries a weight with it.
Hits that we have all heard and love such as “Moth To A Flame” with The Weeknd is a beautiful build with vocals that match epicly. Seinabo Sey, a hit Swedish singer, steals the show with “Don’t Go Mad,” as we actually are for this track. A nu disco synth with her voice just works. “Calling On” is just that, with a sample from Cassietta George’s 1967 recording of “In the Garden” the track delivers beautiful feelings of sadness and joy in one.
