In the offbeat world of glitch-hop, Tipper is a name that stands alone. As the primary pioneer of the genre, Tipper – real name Dave Tipper – has used his decade-plus of experience in the electronic music world to consistently push the genre to new heights. Renowned worldwide for his production skills – running the gamut from early forays into ambient and breaks to a slew of glitch albums and EPs released on his own label, Tippermusic – and his second-to-none live shows, which often feature a majority of unreleased music and elements of vinyl turntablism, Tipper is a DJ’s DJ, a true workhorse in the industry.
Unfortunately, health concerns have affected his output and touring capabilities on and off since shortly after the release of the highly praised “Broken Soul Jamboree” in 2008. A few weeks ago, he posted on Facebook, suggesting the issues had grown worse:
Fast forwarding to earlier this afternoon, Tipper posted again, stating he’d be undergoing open heart surgery in less than 24 hours:
While he’s been crafting music and playing to crowds for more than 15 years, Tipper’s income has remained modest – and heart surgery is quite expensive. As a result, he is releasing an EP – “Dusty Bubble Box”, a reference to his earlier trio of EPs “Bubble Control”, “Puzzle Dust” and “Shatter Box” – featuring unreleased VIP remixes of his work. Additech, the website hosting the EP, has relinquished their cut of the album’s sales, so 100% of the money will go towards alleviating the cost of Tipper’s surgery.
In the age of overpriced concerts and ten-dollar beers, $4.50 is essentially a steal, especially for unreleased material from a top-notch artist. More importantly, though, this is a chance to do something more than buy a few songs. It’s a chance to help out a regular guy in a tough situation. He’s given us nearly two decades of dedication and beautifully crafted music; let’s give him something back.
