As a festival that’s been on the move with three venues in four years, Trillectro may have found the ideal home at Merriweather Post Pavilion.
In past years, attendees reported ticketing and line entrance issues, but by all accounts this year’s entrance process was quick, smooth, and hassle free — which can’t be said for many large events.
The size of the crowd gradually increased throughout the day, and although the event didn’t sell out, it felt like the perfect balance of a live atmosphere without having to sacrifice one’s personal space.
Throughout the first half of the day, local and less experienced acts performed at the 9:32 Club, which served as the secondary stage. Artists such as HI$TO, Babeo Baggins, and Mista Selecta, who lacked experience, more than made up for it with their energy. However, 9:32 stage lost some of its luster in the mid-afternoon when it became an all-male mosh pit; one of the emcee’s had to remind the crowd that guys could dance with girls too.
As the sun began to set and daylight began to fade, it became more clear that Merriweather Post Pavilion is one of the finest places to see headline acts perform. Norwegian DJ Cashmere Cat took the stage in the early evening, delivering a set full of his trademark downtempo style mixed with loads of hip-hop and R&B samples. His exit was abrupt , but the performance set the stage for the acts following.
After a stellar showing from rapper Dom Kennedy, RL Grime entered and took complete control of the festival. The man who is on the Mount Rushmore of trap music delivered a fun, energetic set that had non-EDM fans (~60% of the crowd) twerking and two-stepping of their rockers. Infused with his original tracks like “Tell Me” and “Scylla”, RL Grime dropped a number of crowd pleasing hip-hop anthems such as Lil Wayne’s “A Milli” and Drake’s “Enemies”.
Chance the Rapper provided an outstanding closing act, showcasing his immense talent of singing, rapping, and ability to captivate and inspire the entire crowd.
Overall Grade: A
Trillectro made vast improvements with security and ticketing processes by moving to Merriweather Post Pavilion. They assembled an outstanding lineup that truly encompassed their theme of hip-hop & electronic artists, and each act brought their A-game performances. To improve to an A+, I would have liked to have seen one more accomplished DJ act on the lineup, such as GTA, What So Not, or gLAdiator. At this point though, it’s splitting hairs on an overall exceptional event.
