Ultra Music Festival’s ‘Mission: Home’ is changing the game for sustainability at live events. Launched in 2019, the program has grown immensely by 2024, rolling out 50 well-thought-out initiatives that include waste diversion programs, educational outreach, and strong community partnerships.
This year alone, ‘Mission: Home’ hit a milestone by diverting 50% of waste away from landfills—a whopping 293,000 pounds. Festival-goers were able to experience eco-friendly features like soft plastics recycling, water refill stations, and bans on single-use plastics, while local communities saw direct benefits through food donations and construction material recycling.
The journey of ‘Mission: Home’ mirrors how Ultra Music Festival itself has evolved over the years.
Starting as a grassroots event in 1999, it has grown into a global phenomenon that combines entertainment with a strong focus on environmental responsibility. At the heart of this shift is a dedication to making meaningful changes. From teaming up with groups like Recreate Miami and Clean Vibes to connecting with fans online, the program’s mission “to expand environmental consciousness” empowers fans to know they have resources on how to minimize their carbon footprint.
A standout feature of ‘Mission: Home’ is how it inspires real change in its community.
Before the festival, initiatives like shoreline cleanups with groups such as Clean Miami Beach and Love the Everglades Movement helped clear thousands of pounds of trash from Miami’s waterways. On-site, the Eco Village provided hands-on education and engagement for attendees, blending learning with action. By combining these pre-event and on-the-ground efforts, ‘Mission: Home’ creates a well-rounded sustainability strategy that leaves an impact long after the event wraps up.
The recognition speaks volumes about the program’s success.
‘Mission: Home’ won its fourth SUNsational Award at the 2024 Florida Festivals and Events Association Convention, adding to a growing list of accolades, including the Sustainability Team Award from the World Sustainability Awards.
These honors highlight Ultra’s leadership in sustainability among North American festivals.
As Ultra approaches its 25th anniversary, the festival remains committed to raising the bar for environmental responsibility, showing that celebration and conservation can go hand in hand.
