In the latest installment of his “Beautiful Things” tour, Australian electronica artist What So Not took over The National in Richmond, Virginia for an evening of genre-defying tunes and world class visuals in the Commonwealth’s capital city.
Presented by East-Coast promotion company Steez Promo, the April 27 show attracted electronic music aficionados from around the Richmond and Washington D.C. region. Hot off the heels of performances in Europe, Asia and South America – and the release of his hit track “Be Ok Again” – What So Not, born Chris Emerson, is riding a wave of success that knows no international boundaries.
Centered around his debut album Beautiful Things, the show featured a medley of beloved What So Not tracks like “High You Are” and “Gemini” freshly remixed and reworked for the 2018 tour. Openers Michael Christmas and James Earl warmed up the crowd with hip-hop and throwback jams, and guitarist Trev Lukather helped blur the line between live and electronic music with mind bending riffs that perfectly complimented Emerson’s taste for dramatically reinterpreting tracks.
The stage setup featured no shortage of visual stimulation with eye-catching elements including a 9 ft. tall horse pulling a chariot, a bounty of blooming mushrooms, and post-apocalyptic tires smashed into the DJ booth. Crisp, quixotic visuals in every color of the rainbow aligned perfectly with track transitions and a wide array of lasers pierced in and around the crowd.
