This June 11-14 all walks of music will unite in Manchester, Tennessee, creating a little 80,000-person city called Bonnaroo. The artists that will grace the vaguely named What, Which, This, That, and Other stages and tents range from the biggest acts in music today, to breakthrough bands, and legendary performers from before our time.
Narrowing down 150 performances to a list of just ten sets was not easy, but a lineup of all 30 shows we’re dying to see would defeat the purpose, don’t you think? So breakout your schedule and compare the sets you’re most excited for with ours in WRR’s ten most anticipated sets of Bonnaroo 2015.
10. Glass Animals
Glass Animals is one breakthrough band that we hope you get a chance to see this weekend at Roo. We loved everything off their debut album Zapa, and word on the street is that their live show is a magnetic performance not to be missed. The band will be packing The Other Tent on Thursday from 9:45 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.
9. My Morning Jacket
Equal parts southern rock and improvisational jam, My Morning Jacket is that show you have to catch when the opportunity presents itself. We’ll see if MMJ can top the four hour set they played on the farm back in 2008, that still have people talking. Still not sold? Give their new album The Waterfall a listen on your trek to Manchester. MMJ performs on the What Stage on Saturday from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m.
8. Kendrick Lamar
Kendrick Lamar has been in the news this week for visiting a New Jersey high school and listening to students’ poetry – a perfect, positive mindset to kick off Bonnaroo week. He’s a hip-hop icon of our generation who has been crushing fest after fest this year, and his set Friday at the What Stage from 9:45 p.m. to 11 p.m. is sure to be no different.
7. Gramatik
We’ve got your lowtemp fix with all the grooves and feels of Gramatik at the Other Tent on Thursday late night from 12:15 a.m. to 1:15 a.m. Denis is always one to put on a killer show, and his chill vibes will be the perfect touch to close out day one of Roo.
6. Deadmau5
After a weekend of headlines fueled by technical difficulties, and getting slammed by Ryan Adams last weekend at Governor’s Ball, we’re kind of dying to see what might go down at Deadmau5’s set. Fingers crossed that it will be a drama free evening and that the dome will be in full force and ready to blow our minds Friday at the What Stage from 12 a.m. to 1:30 a.m.
5. Earth, Wind and Fire
How can you not be excited to get down to some “Boogie Wonderland” and “September”? It’s hard to sit still just thinking about it. You never realize how much you love a band like Earth, Wind and Fire until you start groovin’ to their classics. Catch them on Friday at the Which Stage from 11:30 p.m. to 12:45 a.m.
4. Robert Plant and the Sensational Space Shifters
Just today the legendary lead singer of Led Zeppelin, Robert Plant, announced that he is postponing two of his shows this week due to laryngitis, but luckily Bonnaroo will not be one of them. Again, this is one of those few chances you get to see an infamous rock star right before you. We expect all eyes and ears to be on the Which Stage on Sunday from 7:45 p.m. to 9 p.m.
3. Bassnectar
Fresh off an insane three nights of selling out Red Rocks and on the verge of releasing his new Into the Sun LP, Lorin Ashton is poised to blow the question mark right off the Which Stage this Saturday night from 1 a.m. to 2:15 a.m. Expect new music, the possibility that he’ll play past his set time, and in a magical universe maybe the unfolding of a Pretty Lights collaboration.
2. Throwback SuperJam Dance Party
The SuperJam is a Bonnaroo tradition of epic, improvisational proportions, and this year the theme is throwback dance party featuring a roster of artists all across the board. Pretty Lights, Run DMC, Chance the Rapper, and Rob Trujillo from Metallica all on the same stage…it’s going to get wild. All of this talent will be packed into The Other Tent on Saturday late night from 1:30 a.m. to 3:30 a.m., stretched from it’s originally scheduled 3 a.m. time slot cap.
1. Billy Joel
Billy Joel was the booking that set Bonnaroo ahead of the festival pack this year. The “Piano Man” himself will bring Roo 2015 to a close on the What Stage on Sunday night from 9 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. Who else is ready to be sprawled out in a field being serenaded to by one of the most iconic artists in musical history?
Don’t forget to take your blinders off and explore acts outside of your set schedule and comfort zone this weekend. Roo is the perfect place to discover bands you’ve never heard of and stumble upon sets you had never planned to catch so make sure you allocate time between your show schedule for wandering.
Tickets are still available for Bonnaroo, going down June 11-14 in Manchester Tennessee.
