On April 9th, 2014 we published a satire article titled “11 Reasons to Date an EDM Chick.” It boasts big butts, beautiful females and funny bullet points. The article received praise and hilarious comments as well as many shares via social media, but, to our dismay, it also managed to upset some readers. The one thing we care about more than electronic music is our passionate readership. We treasure all opinions and we read and consider every comment made on our articles. Our main goal is to publish content that will spark conversation, thought, as well as action and while this article was a step off of that path, one reader decided it was necessary to bring us back to our serious roots by offering a list of REAL reasons to date an EDM lover.
After reading Jane Eden‘s rebuttal we were quick to contact her and ask her if we could publish her words as an editorial. Her comments provided great points from her kind heart, and it’s our pleasure to publish her thoughts. Jane’s rebuttal is below and as always, feel free to offer your own opinion.
1. Music Discovery
“They will introduce you to music you wouldn’t normally hear, and you’ll have the chance to broaden your musical tastes. You’ll stop calling it all techno REAL quick.”
2. Money Doesn’t Matter
“They don’t mind that you’re broke, because they spent all their money on concert tickets too. Your dates will be cheap or free.”
3. Couples That Rave Together, Stay Together
“They are pretty good at navigating a crowd, you’re not gonna get lost as long as they’re with you. If you want to be up front, they’ll help you get there and make sure you don’t get pushed or too jostled.”
4. Your Relationship Will Always Be High Quality
“They will not let you listen to YouTube-quality tracks through Walgreens earbuds (LIFE IS TOO SHORT FOR POOR SOUND QUALITY)”
5. Free Shows? Maybe.
“Free shows, sometimes. Your raver probably knows a few DJs who will let you in because they’re friends (not because of a lady’s “assets,” seriously screw that, raver girls are not objects). And he or she definitely knows how to lick-and-stick an entry stamp. See #2.”
6. EDM Lovers Know How To Party
“They are probably pretty fun at parties. They’ve been to a lot of them (usually afterparties) and know how to make sure everyone is having a good time and being safe without playing grandparent. They might know some cool tricks too (poi, gloving, orbits etc), which are pretty sweet to watch and play with.”
7. Respect
“They are f*cking respectful. Ok, well, there are a lot of folks at concerts who could brush up on their PLUR, but for the most part, EDM listeners tend to know what’s up. You go to a concert that’s packed, shoulder-to-shoulder, and still no one’s gonna try to grab your boobs. And if anyone stumbles, they’re helped back up by friends and strangers alike. They should know that when it comes to touch, permission and consent are the most important things ever.”
8. Protection
“They’re lookin’ out for you. At all concerts, (not just EDM you guys) some people have a tendency to go a bit too hard and sometimes need a little taking care of. They know who is fine, who needs water, who needs a friend to lean on, and who needs a ride home. They take care of their friends.”
9. Independence
“Conversely, they are looking out for themselves. They could go to a festival and lose their whole group in the crowd, with a dead phone battery, and no cash, and be totally fine. They know their bodies’ and brains’ limits and are resourceful (plus they probably has a lot life-hacks for what to do when things don’t go as planned). They can take care of themselves so you can take care of you. Then you can just have awesome times together instead of being worried.”
10. His/Her Friends Will Turn Into Your Rave Family
“I have never met a more passionate group than the electronic listeners. When they are talking about the songs, artists and albums they love, their eyes will light up, they’ll get really stoked and animated, and it’s one of the cutest things ever. 🙂 All people get about 5,000 times more attractive when they’re doing/talking about the things they love, and we LOVE THE MUSIC so f*cking much.”
11. Music Can Come First
“This leads me to my last point: You don’t have to love them more than you love your music, whether that’s EDM, rock, metal, or hip hop, it really doesn’t matter. We get it, I promise. I’m pretty sure there is no love more intense and powerful than the love of music, and that’s 100% okay by us. It’s as it should be.”
