Our final edition of #14 Fest Artist Spotlight focuses on the headliners, The Chainsmokers. This duo from New York has really evolved over their three year rise to the top of the Electronic and Dance charts. Brought to the forefront over a certain single (which we’ll touch on in a little bit), The Chainsmokers have proven that they are more than one hit wonders through diverse releases and fantastic live performances.
Erase ft. Priyanka Chopra
The first single from The Chainsmokers should have been a clue as to how big this duo would get. “Erase” is a powerful electro house track with great melodies and impressive vocals from Bollywood actress and singer Priyanka Chopra. With a former Miss World pageant winner featured in your song, it’s hard not to be successful. Nevertheless, if you had no idea who was singing, you would be in awe of the vocal performance on this track. “Erase” was the first of many incredible songs from The Chainsmokers.
#SELFIE
This is the track that put The Chainsmokers on the map. #SELFIE, a quasi-satire of pop culture with a solid house beat, became bigger than anyone could have imagined. The social media connotations were a hit with the masses and paved the way for a few controversial TV appearances by the group. Regardless of your opinion, this song was a success and gave The Chainsmokers a platform to share music with the world.
Roses ft. Rozes
This is one of my favorites from The Chainsmokers because it is an abrupt switch from their classic electro pop brand. Roses features a smooth future bass sound with beautiful melodies and a drop section that is perfect. Rozes provides amazing vocals and the pure emotion behind this song makes it a classic that you will hear for years to come.
Don’t Let Me Down ft. Daya
This track is another switch from The Chainsmokers’s usual style. A gorgeous guitar sample leads into vocal from Pittsburgh singer Daya. The song appears like another emotional roller coaster from The Chainsmokers but sends you in a different direction with its trap style drop. “Don’t Let Me Down” captures you with feeling and then urges you to throw all of that away and just dance. This track further proves how genre-bending The Chainsmokers can be.
Inside Out ft. Charlee
“Inside Out” is the latest and my favorite release from The Chainsmokers. I feel like emotion has been mentioned with almost every track in this spotlight (as if it were one of their strengths), but this song takes the cake. Everything in this song, from the vocals, to the leads, to the bass, is perfect. It is heavy yet soft; powerful yet gentle. The main synth melody complements the future-bass influences in this track so well that you can’t be sure what genre to classify it under. This one will be on my list of songs to hear from their Mainstage performance at #14Fest.
I always try to comment on how an artist’s live performance may differ from perceived expectations. Even if you don’t like music from The Chainsmokers, you won’t want to miss their live set. House, Deep House, Dubstep, Trap; you’ll hear it all from The Chainsmokers. It’s this diversity that keeps their shows fresh, entertaining, and fun. While you won’t have much of a choice, you’ll want to get a good spot with plenty of room to move around during their set. The Chainsmokers are the perfect artists to play #14Fest into the night.
