When I look at the #14fest lineup, one name sticks out in particular. In the midst of all the hip-hop and festival-style electronic music lies Mr. Fijiwiji. A producer out of Pittsburgh PA, Mr. Fijiwiji makes music that can be placed under the genre of “smooth bass”. His productions have a dubstep feel while utilizing long bass sounds that are guaranteed to give you the feels every time. The melodies in his songs also remind me of certain tracks from the beloved Mr. Carmack. After listening through his soundcloud, it’s clear that his music has struck a chord with people. The Friends EP and Growing up EP, released through Monstercat, showcase his songwriting and ability to create landscapes of sound. While his original music is great in itself, my favorite tracks from Mr. Fijiwiji have to be his remixes. Having a point of reference like there is when you listen to a remix makes his sound that much more unique.
This was one of the most remixed songs of this past year. The beginning of this remix stays true to the original, throwing the vocals over a hip hop beat with deep bass. The chorus then chops up the vocals of the original to create a mellow trip hop version of one of the biggest songs last year.
A couple years old, this remix of “Air” by Hellberg, Teqq, and Taylr Renee is another one of my personal favorites. Sometimes less is more when making a remix; taking a song and placing it into another context takes a certain amount of tastemaking ability. Mr. Fijiwiji has sucessfully taken the emotion from the original track and given it a melodic dubstep vibe, without getting too heavy.
Live, Mr. Fijiwiji throws a diverse selection of tracks from all tempi. Consider yourself lucky if you recognize a track from his sets; you won’t know what is playing but you’ll be loving it. Be sure to get there during the day to check him out at #14 Fest because you won’t want to miss one of the hidden gems of Saturday.
