Gracing the #14Fest stage with his presence is arguably the biggest new rap artist in the game: Los Angeles rapper Lil Dicky. Midway through 2015 he dropped his first commercial album Professional Rapper that saw a #1 spot on the Billboard Rap charts, and he hasn’t stopped there. Recently he posted a photo via instagram from his studio session with Diplo and Skrillex which left us unable to keep that collaboration out of our minds.
Lil Dicky has always been the black sheep in Hip-Hop. His lyrics are unconventional but his impeccable flow combined with bits of comedy has resonated with fans who are bored with the usual topics of modern rap. In a world where rappers are trying to prove who’s the “hardest”, Lil Dicky will straight up tell you he is not. Never fear though; his regular-guy attitude hasn’t stunted his growth in the scene as evidenced by his biggest hit with rap superstars Fetty Wap and Rich Homie Quan. It appears as if this niche act has finally reached the mainstream.
In my opinion however, Lil Dicky’s best material was as an unsigned artist. His two albums So Hard and Hump Days rival his latest album in creativity and eclectic selection of beats. “Russell Westbrook on a Farm” off of Hump Days really showcases his artistic ability. A six minute story behind a mellow hip-hop beat uses a metaphor of Russell Westbrook’s rise to the NBA as a way for Lil Dicky to contemplate his own rise to success. The lyrics in this song flow as if he was in the room talking off the top of his head which makes it one of my favorites.
Another aspect of his music that makes Lil Dicky great are his beats. His music walks the line; dipping into the heavy bass and 808 sounds that have become a formula for mainstream Hip-Hop but also experimenting with sounds found in electronic music. The song “Famous Dude” is an example, mixing a twerk style beat with sounds found in some EDM selections.
One thing is for certain: when Lil Dicky hits the stage at #14Fest, it will be live. Lil Dicky encompasses everything that the modern rap game isn’t and we love him for it. As like the rest of us, Dicky is just a regular person trying to have fun who doesn’t care what others think about him. It is this nonconformist and free-spirited nature that makes Lil Dicky a must see at any festival. We won’t be missing his set at #14Fest and will be praying for a glimpse of the Jack Ü collab.
