Voodoo Experience is known for it’s very contemporary lineup selection as well as a mystical atmosphere, but the festival itself is starting to get pretty seasoned. Originally starting in 1999, Voodoo Experience was always the place to be on Halloween. Back then Third Eye Bind, The Train, The Roots, and Moby were the headliners of Voodoo. When you compare the lineups, Voodoo has historically always chosen a handful of artist from what seems like all genres. Amazingly, this same formula of how to create a great lineup holds more true today than it ever has. Without further adieu, enjoy these photos from the last 15 years of Voodoo Experience.
1999
Moby getting deep in the live experience. Mixing live instrumentation with electronic is always a hot move. Moby is clearly doing this with grace.
2000
The millennial year! Here Eminem’s killin’ it like it’s 1999. If Slims very early 2000’s outfit isn’t doing it for you, check out the old school DJ in the back. I’d like to hear his DJ set.
2001
This is when Snoop Dogg still had his pimp hand strong. Here Snoop Dogg is posing with Maynard James Keenan of Tool while at Voodoo Experience. Snoop Dogg’s necklace has me guessing what they just got done doing. Thank God for eye drops.
2002
The makeup and outfit is definitely boasting a decade old vibe. Gwen Stefani showing off that flat belly. Get it, girl! I wonder if its still exists 12 years later..
2003
This is a rather iconic photo that has floated around the internet for what seems like forever. Iggy and Manson. Two extreme rockers from a different era.
2004
Critically acclaimed hip-hop trio Beastie Boys headlined in 2004. Looking pretty good given the group originally started in ’81! Their style and music has always been timeless.
2005
Electro-rock group Mindless Self Indulgence were among the groups who were tearing up the stages in 2005. The group is actually very much still together and still releasing music, remix anyone?
2006
Red Hot Chili Peppers going full force during their “Stadium Arcadium” era..ahh those were the days. A DJ known as DJ Jinx also played at Voodoo this year, but no photos could be found of the event.
2007
M.I.A. showing off a very futuristic style with her DJ in the back in this Voodoo 2007 photo, for M.I.A., “Paper Planes,” was just getting big and a brand new musical universe was soon to be born.
2008
In 2008, Lil’ Wayne’s “Tha Carter III” was breaking new ground in rap music. Even though Lil’ Wayne is notorious for not showing up at his own shows, he made it! What’s better is his accompaniment by a DJ, something everyone should have behind them when they’re anywhere.
2009
If you don’t know Gogol Bordello, you should. The gypsy-punk group was a perfect addition to the Voodoo Experience theme, playing here in 2009.
2010
At the turn of the decade Voodoo began booking some notable DJs we know today. Here A-Trak throws down an amazing hip-hop-disco set on classic viynl turntables. Go, A-Trak, go!
2011
The incredible Dirty South took the stage in 2011, most likely playing out a mixture of hard-hitting electro-house and sentimental progressive anthems.
2012
Skrillex throws on a mask during his 2012 Voodoo Experience set, if the mask isn’t enough for you, he’s wearing a human skeleton onesie below that. One of the perks of Voodoo being on Halloween!
2013
A trippy experience isn’t complete without the big-man himself: Bassnectar. No need for an description – you know Nectar transformed the crowd by the end of his set.
2014
Laugh, cries, photos, videos and, most importantly, great memories are all to be made during Voodoo Experience 2014. Everyone from Congorock to Skrillex to Galantis will be taking the “Le Plur” stage this year. And that’s only one stage.
It’s not too late to make plans, check out Voodoo Experience’s 2014 lineup and secure your pair of tickets.
