There is no doubt that the popularity of dance music, or “EDM”, as it is most commonly referred to in the mainstream media, has skyrocketed in in recent years, with the genre having flourished into a distinguished, and remarkably lucrative industry. 2014 has indubitably been a big year for electronic music, with countless noteworthy releases making waves within this scene, in addition to capturing the attention of a larger, more generalized audience.
That being the case, a handful of dance music artists have been nominated for the 2014 edition of the annual MTV VMAs in various categories including Best Direction, Best Visual Effects, as well as Best Cinematography to name a few, and perhaps more contentiously, Best Pop Video. Not surprisingly, widely-known dance hits such as DJ Snake and Lil Jon’s “Turn Down For What”, as well as Zedd’s “Stay The Night” (ft. Hayley Williams) landed nominations in multiple categories, while highly-prominent artists such as Avicii, Martin Garrix, and David Guetta also appear on the list. To many electronic music fans’ delight, some diverse, and especially innovative producers such as Gesaffelstein, and Disclosure have received nominations for their music videos in a variety of categories as well.
