It’s finally time to kick off festival season, and thanks to the tweets and Facebook comments I’ve been reading, I can tell that many of our readers are excited for Electric Daisy Carnival New York this year. The wait is down to two more days, and like many of you, I’m still working on setting up a schedule that will satisfy my musical cravings.
I’ve been to a bunch of festivals, and one of many things I’ve learned is that many people don’t show up until well into the day. If this sounds like you, then I encourage you to break that habit; get a good night sleep, and wake up at a reasonable hour so you can check out EDCNY’s early offerings. Below, you’ll find five artists with early set times that I think you absolutely can’t miss on day one. Of course, this depends on your own taste, so feel free to disagree.
1. Tyler Sherritt (Set Time: 12:00 – 1:00 PM)
A few months ago Tyler Sherritt released a fantastic original progressive house tune with Carl Nunes – with whom he’s collaborated with in the past. The record is titled “Survive” and features Tyler’s vocals. It reached #1 on Guatemalan radio for four months and is a rocking festival record. Sherritt opened for Armin van Buuren on New Year’s eve 2013, and his set properly prepped a hungry crowd for a long night (and morning) of dancing. If you’re looking for a fun, unpredictable mix filled with trance, progressive, and deep tech-y sounds, Tyler Sherritt is the right guy to kick your Friday off.
2. Hyperbits (Set Time: 1:00 – 2:00 PM)
It’s hard to believe that Hyperbits started out in 2011, since they’ve shared the stage with some pretty incredible names, including Sander van Doorn, EDX, Michael Woods, and more. I really dig this duo’s sound. Hyperbits is most widely known for their record “Close Your Eyes,” featuring Skela. Following it’s release, “Close Your Eyes” peaked at #10 on Beatport’s Trance top 100 chart. You’d better believe that if you catch Hyperbits at 1:00 – 2:00 PM on Friday you’ll get an opening performance that’ll be hard to forget.
3. Luminox (Set Time: 2:00 – 3:00 PM)
Whether you’re a fan of trap music or not, it’s here to stay. And if you are, Luminox is a day-starter you wouldn’t want to skip out on. His tight drum beats, screaming synth lines, and mesmerizing snare rolls will make the crowd dance a little dirty. His latest offering, “Tantrum”, is a good example of what to expect.
4. Alex Young (Set Time: 3:00 – 4:00 PM)
For me, as well as other 808, hi-hat, and snare lovers, showing up to see Alex Young is a no-brainer. His “Hood Euphoric” style will send your mind on a smooth journey. But not to worry if that’s not your thing, because Young is also known for working with some extra hard, hip-hop styled beats. He has the arsenal to fuse everything from electro-trap to mellow-trap in one set alone. If you’re still on the edge of deciding whether or not to spend your afternoon at the Bass Pod stage, download and listen to A.Y’s remix of BenZel’s “Fallin’ Love” to make your decision a little easier.
5. Cedric Gervais (Set Time: 2:30 – 3:30)
To conclude your morning warm up session, I highly recommend gracing your ears and soul with the sounds of Cedric Gervais. His style dips into realms of both progressive and electro-house, and his remix of Lana Del Rey’s “Summertime Sadness” sat at the top of Beatport’s charts for some time. With records like “Deception” and his timeless hit “Molly,” there’s no way you could keep your body still. I recommend listening to his latest “Miamication” podcast to get a taste of what Cedric might play in his set.
