After attending Buku Music + Art Project last spring, I was a changed man. So much action had occurred in what was only a two-day time span, my brain was still trying to process the experience days after. Buku Project is only a couple of years old, but the festival they put on gets bigger, bolder, and provides more eclectic acts with each passing year. I’ve broken Buku down into five experiences you won’t want to miss :
The History
It’s no secret that New Orleans is bursting at the seams with artistic history. The vast city has been the nexus for thousands of entertainers for over 100 years and a platform for a multitude of genres including: Jazz, Blues, Rock, Rap, and more recently, Nola Bounce and Electronic music in general. Buku Project, with an equally diverse lineup of genres, has now become a chronicle in New Orleans music history, a theme that is reflected within the design of the festival.
The City
One of the best parts of New Orleans is: no matter where you are, the faded (or not so faded) sound of music is always in the background. This energetic musical spirit of Nola is a fulfilling reminder that you’re about to rage your face off in the next coming nights
The Atmosphere
Buku doesn’t include “Art” in the title for nothing. The 2-day event features live spray painters, art stands, and New Orleans themed props abound. It’s essentially a festival built into a history tour. On one end: the Mississippi River with the S.S. Buku ferry afloat, the opposite end: a music stage within a vivid Mardi Gras parade warehouse.
The Fashion
Buku is where Mardi Gras and Rave costumes collide. You’ll find the strangest and loudest set of clothing and accessories strapped to the most unlikely of characters. And don’t forget the Kandi, lots of Kandi.
The Lineup
The lineup has always focused on selecting a handful of new, up-and-coming, and legendary acts from a variety of backgrounds. Personally I’m psyched for Ellie Goulding, The Flaming Lips, David Guetta, Kaskade, Pusha T, Zedd, Explosions In The Sky, Tyler, the Creator, and Beats Antique, but dozens more are set to perform.
