Seasoned dance music fans may know Canadian artist, Dan Snaith, by the pseudonym of Caribou, which artfully contrasts his more club-focused alias, Daphni (his proclaimed response to “mind-numbing predictability of the EDM barfsplosion”), and will be ecstatic to see that this renowned electronic music veteran has returned with a striking new release, entitled Our Love. Comprised of ten grooving, and mellifluous tunes, this highly anticipated album is scheduled to drop on October 7th, and will certainly showcase the evolution of Caribou’s distinctive style over the years. Having chatted with Inthemix last week, Caribou divulged many interesting tidbits of information about this release (off of which two tracks are currently available to stream), which we have recapped below:
1. Caribou is most excited about sharing his music with others, and is meant to be enjoyed by people with a range of musical tastes, even if they differ from his own
“That was the only thing I knew at the start: that I wanted to make an album that was about sharing something with other people…I made this album explicitly to share with people – it was outward looking, rather than thinking about my own personal musical indulgence – so I’m really eager to share it.”
2. He wants this release to be versatile, and be enjoyed in various contexts – not uniquely on the dance floors of clubs
“I’m pretty conscious about not limiting what Caribou’s about. It should include all the things that I love musically and am interested in musically. With Daphni, every track should work on a dancefloor to some degree. It’s all made to be played in a club. [With] Caribou I want to cover all different kinds of moods.”
3. Inspiration for Our Love was drawn from his own real life experiences, especially those that have arisen with age
“Two of my close friends have been divorced during the making of this record. I’ve had friends pass away and my daughter was born three years ago, so that was obviously a huge part of it. So this album is not necessarily just about love in a partnered relationship, it’s about the connections with your family and friends, with your children, with your parents and also with your partner. With music itself.”
4. Caribou sees British electronic artist, Four Tet’s involvement as a vital part of the album’s creation
“He is the uncredited collaborator on the album. I got feedback from him about everything, every step of the way – which songs, their arrangements, the mix, the mastering, the artwork. It’s beyond fair to say he’s a collaborator on the record, even though he’s not credited as singing a song or playing an instrument.”
5. He came up with a plethora of drafts and snippets of tracks until he settled on the existing album versions
“There were 900 drafts of tracks, I think. It’s been years since the last one, so there was plenty of time to try out new ideas and then leave them behind. It seems like a necessary thing for me. It’s what seems exciting musically to me, getting in there and getting my hands dirty…I wanted to get as much of that texture and depth into the music as possible, both in the lyrics and the sound of the record. I don’t know if that’s happened, but that was the idea.”
To sum things up, Caribou made a comment on the current state of the “EDM” scene, expressing his disinterest in the profit-driven industry, and his excitement over what the future holds for electronic music as a whole;
“But I am interested to see what comes next. Everything in that music is so amped up, everything is turned up to eleven, all the builds and drops are so huge – can that continue? Are the builds just going to get bigger and bigger and bigger until that’s the whole song? Or are things going to have to restart and shift gears to get somewhere else”
Our Love will be available for purchase through iTunes on October 7th.
