Lorde’s debut studio album, “Pure Heroine”, has been making waves all over the internet since its release on September 27th. USA Today called it the “Album of the week”, Billboard gave it an overall 94 rating, and the Huffington Post is saying that it is a lyrical masterpiece.
Ella Yelich-O’Connor, Lorde, is only sixteen years old. With “Pure Heroine” she has managed to infuse elements of pop and alternative to create a unique, interesting texture that stays relevant throughout her entire ten track work. Tunes like “Tennis Court”, “Team”, and her most popular record, “Royals”, have landed her at the top of Billboard’s Alternative Songs Chart. She’s the first women to top that chart in seventeen years and the youngest to be number one on Billboard in twenty-six years.
If you haven’t heard “Pure Heroine” in its entirety I encourage you to give it a shot. Already up-and-coming artists within the electronic dance music scene have jumped on unofficial remixes. It’s only a matter of time until a few high-profile producers offer fresh cuts. Below I’ve listed a few names that I’d like to see rework a track off Lorde’s “Pure Heroine”.
Diplo
Recently Diplo collaborated with Sia and The Weeknd on “Elastic Heart” and offered a sound reminiscent of his “Florida”/”Sound of Fury” days. Lorde’s smooth, elegant vocals are a perfect platform for his old style. It would be refreshing to hear Diplo travel deeper into his roots.
Heroes X Villains
HxV have a slick way of harnessing the emotion of original productions in their remixes, their version of Mt Eden’s “Air Walker” is a perfect example. I’d like to see this pairing rework “Tennis Court” because it already offers a flurry of percussive elements that would complement their style.
Deorro
The Melbourne sound fan-base is growing rapidly around the world and among the fantastic producers that the sub-genre has to offer Deorro is a fan favorite. While he never limits himself to one genre, a Melbourne mix of Lorde’s “Royals” (or any record) would without a doubt sit well with the EDM community. I’m envisioning a plethora of vocal twists complimented by bouncy basslines and Dutch-y synth bars.
Carnage
I can already picture Carnage in the studio picking apart a Lorde record before laying in menacing synths, hi-hats, snare rolls, and slamming 808s. A dark festival trap cut similar to his “Poltergeist” remix with a hardstyle edge would rattle stages across the globe.
Calvin Harris
Calvin Harris’ popular progressive pop sound would mesh seamlessly with any track on “Pure Heroine”. I could see him isolating Lorde’s vocals and flipping one of her records into an uplifting journey backed by smooth chords and an original melody. If he were to remix one of these tunes his version would effortlessly resonate with the masses.
Zeds Dead
Since Zeds Dead’s collaboration with Major Lazer received mixed reviews, I would love to see them answer their critics with an unpredictable Lorde remix. I’ve had their record with Greta Svabo Bech, titled “Shut Up & Sing v2.0”, stuck on repeat since it’s release – something similar would melt hearts. The vibe that their productions provide is simply unmatched.
