Ferry Corsten brings some of the most thumping sets in all of EDM. He’s one of the primary artists responsible for making Trance as popular as its ever been in the U.S., but how much do you really know about this Trance pioneer?
1. He Speaks Filipino
The dashing Dutch DJ found love outside of his native Netherlands when he married his Filipino wife in 2000. As a result, he’s able to carry intermediate level conversations in the language.
2. Corsten was one of the first guest mixers ever on A State of Trance
Long before Armin van Buuren had his yearly global A State Of Trance expedition, Corsten was the third guest mixer ever on ASOT. His appearance came on Episode 058 on August 2, 2002 – More than 500 episodes ago.
3. He has the 4th longest standing Trance radio show
Behind Armin van Buuren’s ‘A State of Trance’, Above & Beyond’s ‘Trance Around the World’ (now ‘Group Therapy’), and Paul van Dyk’s Vonyc Sessions, Ferry Corsten’s ‘Corsten’s Countdown’ is the 4th longest running trance radio show. If we include radio shows of all sub-genre’s, Corsten ranks 6th overall when we add Tiesto’s ‘Club Life’ and Carl Cox’s ‘Global’.
4. He Once formed a Trance DJ duo with Tiesto called ‘Gouryella‘
In 1999, Corsten formed a trance act with fellow Dutchman Tiesto. While they released 6 tracks together over the span of 2 years, Tiesto left the partnership in order to concentrate on his solo work.
5. He Performed with Markus Schulz 3 times before creating New World Punx
Ferry and Markus debuted as the duo New World Punx during ASOT 600 at Madison Square Garden this past March. However, prior to officially dubbing themselves as a pair, they performed exactly 3 times together in this back-to-back fashion. It began in March of 2012 at Godskitchen in Birmingham, U.K. Their next set was in June 2012 at Tao Beach in Las Vegas for EDC, followed by an epic 7 Hour set in November 2012 at Echostage in Washington D.C.
6. He’s an EDM Prophet
During an interview with The Untz in December 2010, Corsten was asked why electronic music was so popular in Europe but not as accepted in the U.S. He answered by saying, “It is getting there and it will be! Mark my words… So, it’s just a matter of time.” He was absolutely correct, as EDM truly started taking off several months later during summer of 2011 (think Identity Festival) and it took the U.S. by storm by 2012.
7. Ferry is currently on his ‘FULL ON Tour’
A concept he created a few years ago, FULL ON is a tour where Ferry invites other talented DJ’s for an exciting night of back to back sets – meaning Ferry and other DJ’s will spin their sets on stage at the same time, going back and forth between songs.
Be sure to catch him for his next show at Echostage in Washington D.C. on 5/11/2013 where he’ll be joined by electrifying trance duo Tritonal and Dutch electro-house duo Bassjackers.
