As the celebration for A State Of Trance 850 has traveled around the world, it has drawn massive crowds. The ASOT family brought the extravaganza to Australia and blew away expectations as the successful show returned to Sydney.
The night started with Ruben De Ronde welcoming early birds to the massive Sydney Showgrounds venue with tunes to start the night off right. His classic sound was the perfect backdrop to the building anticipation.
Orjan Nilsen lightened the mood with his unique brand of melodic trance. As the crowd built, they were eased into the paradise that would become A State of Trance 850.
Gaia quickly changed the vibe and brought power with an energetic and dark set. The duo paired moody and eerie graphics with classic psytrance beats. Armin van Buuren and Benno de Goeij embodied their classic hooded mentality and brought pace with a creepy tinge. Hard, pounding trance was on offer as more and more people stomped their way into the venue.
The second duo to take the stage, NWYR, brought the crowd back to earlier times with a nostalgic set. You can tell exactly what W&W were going for when they created this new moniker. They are going back to their roots and bringing a decades old sound to the forefront. They dazzled with classic tunes that rocked Europe and in a nod to Australia, even threw in some hardstyle.
Finally, the gracious host appeared in all his glory. He started his set with a heartfelt and moving tribute to Avicii. Avicii’s death has sent shock-waves around the entire dance music scene and has caused grief all over the world. The crowd sang along to every song as the previously joyful attendees shared a moment of somber reflection. The tribute ended on a high note celebrating the influential artist and led right into an upbeat and melodic start to Armin’s set.
And what a set it was. Switching between emotional, energetic, dark, and moody, Armin Van Buuren brought it all out. Featuring a heady mix of new and old tracks, that alternated between classic favorites and soon to be hits. The warehouse moved with Armin’s every motion and pulsated with every song.
Not at all intimidated of following a living legend, MaRLo kept the party going for the hometown crowd. He perfectly balanced lighter tunes to keep emotions high with hard dance songs to keep the energy up. Even though he went on late at night, the spirit never flagged as he pushed the Sydney crowd into a frenzy.
Will Atkinson had the tough job of closing an eight-hour show, although you would never know it by how much fun he was having. By really leaning into his fun and irreverent style, he made sure those that stuck around got a present to leave with.
All in all, it was a packed house as over twelve thousand people showed up to see Armin and friends take the stage. It was a memorable night in West Sydney. One that will stick with thousands of people.
