Anjunabeats Volume 10 releases today, and while there’s no doubt that the entire album is obsession-worthy, one track in particular stands out as my favorite: Above & Beyond’s ‘Walter White.’
The track named in honor of the character from the TV series Breaking Bad made its debut as an ID in the final episode of Trance Around the World, or Above & Beyond Group Therapy 001, in Bangalore, India in the middle of November 2012. While still in its ID stage, A&B deliberately flashed the words “Heisenberg” and “Walter White” on the LED screen behind them, hinting at the track’s name.
The song makes a grand entrance with a jaunty and repetitive melody that is impossible not to bop along to. About two minutes in, the style makes a complete 360, flipping from an ethereal and simple sound to a thunderous trance track in a style more characteristic of W&W than Above & Beyond. ‘Walter White’ has the kind of melody that is simple enough to pick up instantly and will stay on your mind for days. Each time ‘Walter White’ appears in a live set, whether at played by Arty at a show in February or at the Anjunabeats Volume 10 release party, the crowd goes mental.

Though Armin’s ‘Waiting for the Night‘ is a close contender, ‘Walter White’ is currently my #1 trance tune of 2013.
