Australia was the latest stop for the Common Ground tour as Above & Beyond hit two capital cities in one weekend. They started off the weekend playing a sold out show in Melbourne on Friday at Hisense Arena before moving onto the Sydney Showgrounds on Saturday. As always Above & Beyond put on an incredible show that the locals will be talking about until the next time the trio makes it to this part of the world.
On Friday, Melbourne deejay Marcus Santoro got the night rolling with his fast-growing sound that calls back to classic trance grooves. The up and coming talent showed off why he’s being backed by the likes of Axwell and Above & Beyond for both releases and guest radio spots.
As the crowd built, Spencer Brown upped the ante. His set played on the lighter side of the spectrum and aimed to build up the good feelings for when the headliners dropped the curtain. Brown made sure that all attendees were in the highest possible spirits for when Above & Beyond took the stage.
Took the stage is probably too much of an understatement for their impressive opening. It had been a while since the trio had been in the country and you could tell they were missed by the incredible reaction from the crowd. As everyone got settled in, magic started to pour out of the speakers.
Obviously, being the Common Ground tour, their latest album was a focus of the set. They were also determined to mix in many of their older hits to make it truly a set of the ages. Unafraid to turn up the heat, they mixed in hard beats and gave fans the full spectrum of feelings in their extended set. They also shined the light on massive hits in the trance scene in the last few years, with tracks by Virtual Self and W&W making appearances. It was a set that showed just how much they wanted to give to the sold-out Melbourne crowd.
It’s never easy to close after the headliners take an extended set on tour (and most likely went a little over time), but Gabriel & Dresden did an admirable job with the unenviable task. They made sure to keep both the happy vibes and dance mood going late into the night (or early into the morning depending on how you look at it).
It was certainly a night to remember in Melbourne. Above & Beyond might be a far away from returning to Australia, but rest assured many adoring fans will be waiting with open arms when they do.
