Three weeks ago, Alex Preston released his new EP, Get It Started, on his label Basement Sound. The Australian producer has been hard at work trying to redefine what elements can constitute a house record. Not satisfied with his already hard hitting and catchy tech and disco house beats, Preston decided to add live instrumentation into the mix. In fact, Get It Started’s dominant feature is the electric guitar utilized throughout each song.
The EP begins with the title track “Get It Started” which immediately transports you to a beach-side club. With heavy doses of piano and guitar, the jazzy vibe would fit right in as a soundtrack to a sunset. Preston uses his guitar to take us a bit deeper in “That’s How I Feel”. The sound is darker but uses Dirty Dutch sounding high tones sparingly to add energy to the sound. “Around” brings the listener back to the party. The guitar takes on a rhythmic role and provides a funky bass-line to set a groovy mood. Finally, “Take It Easy” brings us full circle to the beach-club vibe. The lyrics preach a message of relaxation. However, the horns and funk guitar urge you to get up and dance.
Get It Started is the just the first entry in Alex Preston’s catalogue to feature forward thinking usage of musical elements in dance music. He will be introducing live instruments into his live show throughout the year. 2018 has already been a busy year for Preston and only promises to get more eventful. Keep an eye out for his new releases, no doubt they will feature this unique sound.
