(Shout out to my good friend Stetra, she’s amazing!)
When people think about electronic dance music, you think about the music, the lights, and best of all, the women who attend these events. With their LED tutus, outrageous outfits…or lack of clothing… and wild attitudes about festivals – women are the faces of many after movies and pictures of these festivals. And while electronic dance music is dominating the world, most of the DJs and producers we see now are men. WHERE ARE MY WOMEN AT???
In a recent article published in Slate, they analyzed the gender inequality that Buzzfeed brought up after the lineup for Coachella. Barely 10 percent of the 500 artists were represented by women-fronted acts. And just to drive the nail in harder, Buzzfeed created a infographic showing what the lineup would look like if all male-fronted acts were removed. It’s not a pretty sight to see.
Slate called out the music festival organizers to “expand beyond the narrow roots of this industry and to take the commercially and critically successful female acts more seriously”. Looks like HARD Events co-founder Gary Richards heard the advice and took immediate action.
Recently, Richards revealed plans for an all-female electronic music festival to take place in 2014. In an interview with WildSpice Magazine, Richards admitted that he too had very little female acts at HARD Events, only 8% were women. “I try my hardest to mix it up…I dunno why it ends up being more male-driven. To me, I always think everything’s better with girls.” And so, he created a solution. “I’ve been asked this question so many times that I feel like we need to develop it more…to give girls more of a chance…I have a concept for a show that’s all girl performers.” And that’s exactly what we need. In a predominatntly male industry, women continue to struggle for equal respect behind the decks. “There are some (female DJs) that are killing it — doing way better than the boys,” said Richards himself.
“I’m not worried about selling tickets, its just getting them all at the same time.” While others want Richards to magically produce a 70,000 people festival, it’s going to be a lot harder than it seems. “It’s not a 70,000 person event but I do see more females coming up and I’m definitely going to do it in 2014.”
Richards says the event would probably take place at Los Angeles’ Palladium but he knows he has a lot of work to do before this could become a reality. Who would you love to see at this festival? Tweet to us @raverrafting #allfemalefest
