Bass music is in a weird place right now. On one hand it’s continuing to evolve at an amazing rate, with copycats being left in the dust. But on the other it seems like it’s losing part of what made it great. It seems too many artists right now are trying to make the generic loudest, sickest womps possible and are completely missing out on the continuous “song” feeling. Either it’s a song that can be mistaken for any number of others, or it’s a 1:30 long sound clip claiming to be a track.
Not Doctor P though. One of the OG’s of dubstep and co-founder of Circus Records, this guy has been providing the medicinal wobbles since 2009 and has shown no signs of slowing down. Covering everything from beautiful melodic dubstep to some of the most face incinerating dub ever produced, Doctor P is a name all bass lovers are aware of.
Digging through his tracks reminded us of how great his classics are. Even more impressive though is that some of our favorites were produced in just the last year or two, showing that the Doctor could be better than ever. Take a look below and see if our all-time favorites match up with yours.
10: Example – “Last Ones Standing” (Doctor P Remix)
If you were to go purely by plays on Youtube then this would be one of Doctor P’s biggest hits. For some reason though, we feel like this doesn’t get half the recognition it deserves. Example has notably been remixed by Flux Pavilion and Dillon Francis among others, but none might be better than this offering.
9: Krome and Time – “The License” (Doctor P Remix)
Reaching back to 2011, this is a track we’d show to new listeners of Doctor P. Crazy, frenetic bass take up the majority of the first half, but as with almost all of his songs you need to listen straight through or else you’re selling yourself short. The 3:00 mark sounds like something straight from Destroid, save for the fact that Doctor P was on it three years earlier.
8: Doctor P – “The Champagne Böp”
Seems like just yesterday, but it was two summers ago when this track took over shows and festival stages alike. The first half is trademark Doctor P with the screetching, whiney synths, then you’re hit with the face contorting beauty of 2:30. We have a hard time picking a favorite, but that’s to be expected with a song this great.
7: Doctor P – “Gargoyle”
Released alongside “Sweet Shop” in 2010, this is one of the first tracks to put him on the map. You’ll notice it’s a little different than the previous few, focusing more on slow drums and a head nodding beat. A lot more old-school vibes here.
6: Scroobius Pip – “Sick Tonight” (Doctor P Remix)
This is the part of the list where an argument can be had for any of the remaining tracks to be #1. A full-fledged classic, UK vocalists seem to always go so perfectly with dubstep and this is no exception. Doctor P lent his remixing hands to Scroobius Pip, and the end result was a track he completely remade into his own.
5: Doctor P – “Sweet Shop”
Previously mentioned as being released with “Gargoyle” back in 2010, any fan of Doctor P will know this one. A little reminiscent of Bassnectar’s “What”, be sure to brace yourself and hold onto your face when this is dropped live. This might be five years old already but “Sweet Shop” will never get old.
4: Brown and Gammon – Dark Matter (Doctor P & Mizuki Remix)
Finding a spot all the way at number four, “Dark Matter” might not be one of his most famed tracks but it’s certainly one of our favorites. Slow, controlled, melodic dubstep runs throughout for a calming vibe from the Doctor. Never too heavy or too calm, this track touches a bit on everything and does it all well.
3: DJ Fresh – Louder (Doctor P & Flux Pavilion Remix)
This of course wouldn’t be complete without possibly the most well known track of either these guy’s careers. The head honchos of Circus Records put their heads together in 2011 and catapulted themselves into the spotlight with their iconic remix of DJ Fresh. Easy vocals to sing along to in the crowd, we’re not sure if it can possibly get filthier than the 1:25 mark.
2: Doctor P – “Watch Out”
As with most Doctor P tracks, even obscenely heavy, nasty dubstep tracks like this one have an identity to it. Not simply noise layered upon noise; a catchy 16-bit melody runs throughout and there’s ebbs and flows. Never too in your face for the entire 4:30 duration, Doctor P unleashes his fury, dials it back for a bit, brings in the melody, then repeats. The result is one of his greatest tracks to date.
1: Plan B – Love Goes Down (Doctor P Remix)
And here resting high atop the throne at number one is what we believe to be his finest piece of work. Making use of gorgeous intro vocals supplied by Plan B? Check. Oddly satisfying hardstyle buildup at 1:30? Yeah. All leading up to one of our favorite drops in Doctor P’s illustrious career. It’s the insane production and unique style that makes us love this track so much. Proof this is a timeless track was Kill Paris dropping it live at last year’s Bassnectar show at Red Rocks. Tears were shed. Faces were lost. It was a beautiful thing.
