The young, Dutch DJ and producer Jeffrey Lens dropped his first hit ‘Drop the Guns’ on Spinnin’ Records a while ago and he has never stopped producing smashers ever since. Raised in a small city inside the Netherlands, he was born to become a producer and is being recognized for his energetic sound. He has produced many more hits such as ‘Pump This Party’, ‘Crossover’ and his biggest track so far ‘FAWL’. A few days ago, Alpharock uploaded a new free download called ‘Space Jam’ and it’s full of dynamic tunes and powerful basslines.
In his story below, Alpharock talks about his great stage experiences, past, preferences and music. If you want to get to know this musician a bit better, feel free to check it out!
What inspired you to become a DJ/producer?
I’ve always loved music. My father has been playing guitar ever since he was a kid and my mother sings in choirs and bands, so I’ve been busy with music ever since I was young. I’ve always been attracted to it. I took keyboard lessons for three years, but at a certain point, I decided to quit that. I didn’t feel like it anymore. When I started to go out, I got to know the profession of a DJ. I was very interested in DJ’s. My cousin owned a DJ set, which I thought was pretty cool. I started practicing at his house and this way, I got to know it and I bought my first DJ set. I found out that you actually have to be able to produce your music to break-through, so I downloaded programs for it and started producing my own music. I’ve released a couple of tracks and it’s improving with the years. That’s how I kind of rolled into this world.
What was your moment of break-through?
The moment that Martin Garrix performed my track at the main stage of Ultra. That was an amazing moment for me. It wasn’t my moment of break-through, but I knew that things were getting real.
Who is your favorite artist?
I have a couple of favorite artists. It depends on which music I’m producing at that moment and the vibe I’m in. Sometimes I like to produce music that’s a bit more rough, then I’m a huge fan of Hardwell, Martin Garrix, those guys and sometimes I like to produce progressive, emotional music. Then I like to listen to Swedish House Mafia or Alesso. Those guys are my heroes. It’s a combination of both, but those really inspire me.
So you really like the music you produce yourself as well?
Yes, definitely. Since I started producing music, I’ve always been producing one genre. I’m still very interested in this genre and I still work with it. It’s something you don’t see very often, but it stays interesting for me.
What’s the best place you’ve performed so far?
Locations such as Heineken Music Hall in Amsterdam are really cool, but the most fun locations are the places you don’t expect much of and turn out to be amazing! An example of this is a festival in Belgium that I didn’t know that much about before. When I got there, the crowd was already full of people without anyone performing on stage yet. I was really surprised and that was one of the best performances I ever had. It didn’t matter what I performed or what I said, it was just a crazy performance and those things are so much fun. I think the best performances happen when you expect nothing and it turns out to be the best party ever! The festival was called Schoolrock Festival. It wasn’t very big, but really insane! J
Do you know a specific festival or event you really would like to perform someday?
I would really like to perform at the Tomorrowland’s and the Ultra’s, of course. Those are just the best stages and the best crowds, everybody looks forward to it. It’s something pretty big if you’re performing there. It takes a lot of preparation. That would be one of my biggest dreams. Furthermore, the unexpected and fun places!
Ultra is the perfect spot to perform. Everybody watches the stream, millions of people are watching. You’re in the spotlight and you really need to present yourself properly. I think the pressure is high, but it’s probably totally worth it and so much fun. It would be a great gift.
Are you still able to go to festivals or events for fun?
Yes, I totally can. J With Amsterdam Dance Event I was in the crowd at Spinnin’ Sessions, that was a lot of fun! I like that it’s still possible. Sometimes, people want to take a picture or something, but that’s fun as well. It’s happening at a friendly way and you can talk a bit with the people, it’s nice. This way, you get recognition for your music. If you’re somewhere and someone is coming up to you and tells you he or she likes your music, that’s great! I’m not bothered with unpleasant press or something yet, luckily!
How would you describe your music?
I would describe my music as main stage music. I like to call it music with an euphoric side, which leads people to a higher level. I want my music to contain elements which will make people feel amazed. I want them to remember it, a melody, a vocal or whatever. It must contain a lot of energy.
