Mental Health is usually treated as a taboo subject, especially when it comes to artists or public figures. Being such a delicate subject, we often refrain from speaking about it, even in casual conversations, in order to not create a tensed situation. In fact, to those around us who suffer from mental health issues, an open discussion could be the first step to healing and to a better understanding of what mental health is. This time, DJ and producer Alyx Ander decided to speak up during Music Support’s Mental Health Awareness week. Here’s what he said:
I feel very strongly that we, as a society, will benefit greatly the sooner that mental health is perceived in the same manner of all other aspects of human health; for example, in the same way that we regularly go to the doctor for a physical or a dentist for cleanings and to get our teeth checked for cavities. Once the paradigm towards what it means to be healthy includes mental health, then we’ll have taken the first step in addressing this issue that plagues so many of us. Mental health evaluation should be as common as an annual physical or annual optometrist visit. There should be no stigma associated with taking medication for depression, manic behaviour, or any mental issue in the same way that no one feels guilty for taking insulin if they’re diabetic. The paradigm of Mental health existing as something separate from your body’s physical health, needs to change. It’s all the same thing
We couldn’t agree more. In today’s world, all of us should aim to become more tolerant and more open to discussion when it comes to sensitive topics. Music Support is a charity set to lend a hand to those in the music industry that might feel lost or are struggling with a mental health issue. Through their work, the music scene is becoming a better, safer place for all of us each day. We thank Music Support for their dedication and Alyx Ander for speaking up.
