Respected techno producer Andrew Weatherall is scheduled to play an intimate show at trendy Brixton venue Phonox next week, expected to be bursting with his legendary experimental electronic beats. With over 30 years in the business, Weatherall can most certainly be defined as an EDM luminary, moving from the 80’s acid house into the clubbing scene’s techno-pop era.
Working on Primal Scream’s “Loaded” on the much-lauded Screamadelica earnt the bearded Brit the prize of becoming a top UK disc jockey, from which he went on to produce music for critically-acclaimed 1996 cult classic film Trainspotting. His flirtations with rock were prevalent in his early techno-rooted EPs and later work on his label Rotters Life Club; many have defined his work as genre-bending.
2016’s Convenanza, co-written with Nina Walsh, and the remix album Consalementum released in the same year, are his most recent albums and Phonox attendees on Friday 17th February are sure to be enlightened by his pulsating intelligent dance music (IDM). Phonox provides a cheaper, and more harmonious, alternative to other London hallmark dance locations, a trademark quality of Brixton.
