One of the newer additions to Tchami’s Confession label, ANGELZ has been generating a ton of noise through his unique sound and funky releases. With a sound similar to that of Malaa, it’s no wonder Tchami quickly signed the rising artist to his label. The young producer is based out of Quebec and has already produced two singles on the Confession label, both of which immediately took off after being released. The four track Saint Thug EP covers an array of production capabilities with elements of bass, groove, hip-hop, and future all packed into one. ANGELZ has roots in hip-hop that can often be heard in his releases. Tchami’s Confession label has consistently displayed itself as a premiere label in the industry and this newest EP is sure to be one of its best.
The first track “Crew” is a bass heavy track that will have you grooving from the minute it kicks off. “ATBFWM” contains a noticeable bass line paired with sporadic vocals throughout the track. However, our favorite track off the EP has to be “Stunt”. Packed with hard hitting percussions and an eccentric bass, Stunt is surely to be the star of the EP. RaverRafting had the opportunity to talk with ANGELZ about his latest release as well as time with the Confession label, be sure to check out our exclusive interview below! ANGELZ will be performing at Moonrise Festival in Baltimore this weekend, consider checking his set out to hear all his new tunes!
Which was your favorite song to produce on the “Saint Thug” EP?
ANGELZ: ‘Stunt’ without a doubt. I had so much fun making it , I started with drums and got that rocking then all the rest just fell into place. I sent it to my team and everyone was hyped, the version on the EP is the first and final version I made of it.
Would you say the EP is more leaned towards groove house or deep house?
ANGELZ: ‘Crew’ and ‘ATBWFM’ live in the housier section of my set. They’re more on that hypnotic groove tip. ‘Stunt’ and ‘Want It All’ are what I call ‘music for strip clubs from the year 2019”.
What’s it like releasing on Tchami’s “Confession” label?
ANGELZ: Pretty fitting for the sound & aesthetic I am going for. Tchami isn’t afraid to tell you when something is wack but when he loves it, you know it’s about to be a problem.
Your “Saint Thug” EP was released just two weeks after you “Enfant Terrible” EP, were you working on both at the same time?
ANGELZ: My ‘Enfant Terrible’ EP consists of tracks I had been playing over the past year, they were always big moments in my sets but they didn’t quite fit what I was going for on ‘Saint Thug’. All of the songs on ‘Saint Thug’ were made in the last months so I was exclusively working on these.
Are they any artists you really want to collaborate with on future releases?
ANGELZ: I want to work with any dope rapper that is ready to change the game and redefine club hits as we know them. Rappers that have an audience in their scene, got ideas and want to be pioneers hit me up, we’ll make history.
You’ve been touring in different locations across the globe this summer, how’s that been going?
ANGELZ: I love travelling for music; the energy, connecting with the fans, it takes your motivation to another level. I’m really looking forward going to Australia because I’m sorta familiar with the scene there. There are dope venues where people have really good taste and are very receptive to new music. I’d say they expect it actually.
I hear you spent sometime in Australia preparing your music, why was that?
ANGELZ: After high school I left with my best friend to just go work and travel basically. I’ve been producing forever so at this moment I was just at a different sage. Long story short, it was one of the longest stretch of time where I didn’t make any music at all because back then I didn’t use a laptop for producing. I ended up spending a big portion of my time looking for new music instead and that’s when I realized how big dance music really was. I had been listening to blog house for a couple years but I didn’t know about raves or any big shows like that. At that moment all the stuff being made was becoming really high energy and I could see a lot of connections to what I had been doing all my life, I just had to kind of start over because making beats is different than writing and producing songs.
Any locations you really want to perform at?
ANGELZ: Yes, I want to play everywhere in Europe.
Are there any artists you draw inspiration from when producing music?
ANGELZ: Every time I’m in a creative down I open iTunes and listen to classics from my big 3 ; The Neptunes, Timbaland and Scott Storch. I like listening to J Dilla instrumentals too. I don’t really keep up with what else is happening close to me in terms of inspiration. I believe my early influences shaped me so I focus on that and I play enough recent music at shows to know where I gotta set the bar next.
