At a time when dance music enthusiasts are searching for the next fresh sound, Ape Drums delivers with a unique approach.
In a short period of time, he’s made an impression on some of the most accomplished artists in the industry. As a result, he’s currently embarking on the “Gold Gone Wild” tour with A-Trak and Araab Muzik.
Prior to his June 11th showing at 9:30 Club in Washington D.C., presented by U Street Music Hall, WRR was able to catch up with him to find out more about the rising artist from Houston.
You clearly have a solid relationship with the Fools Gold and Mad Decent labels. How did you develop your relationship with A-Trak, Diplo, and their label-mates?
I met first met A-Trak through my agent ??& Craze. We celebrated his bday at miami music week 2 years ago and we kept in touch ever since then. Diplo I met through jillionaire at a MDBP a couple years ago, as well as the Mad Decent staff. All very amazing people.
Have you challenged A-trak to any DJ battles?
I probably would never do that bc we have 2 very different style of djing haha.
What particular person(s) or event(s) inspired you to produce your style of music?
Ive always loved dancehall and carribean music. Even though i like to make all kinds of music, the dancehall inspired stuff is what caught a lot of peoples attention. I just thought , why not make it bigger sounding, nobody is doing it at the moment.
Would you say that parts of your heritage or upbringing are represented in your music?
I would say just a little bit. Ive always been my own person with my own taste apart from my family & heritage.
What excites you about your upcoming performance in Washington D.C. at 9:30 Club?
SO much. Ive heard a lot of good things about DC, and also it will be my first time there.
Certainly a unique name, how did you decide on ‘Ape Drums’
Ape Drums actually started off as a duo. We loved drums so we wanted the word “drums” in the actual name. My friend was in the studio doodling a gorilla with nikes on. I just put the 2 together as ‘ape drums’ and thought it sounded dope.
In a DJ market that is more talented now than it’s ever been, what differs you from other artists and makes you stand out?
Definitely my song selection, live edits & production style.
Do you prefer club shows or festival gigs?
I love both bc they are very different dj sets. Festivals are very BIG while club shows are very eclectic and fun. I still take risks at both, and its always been good.
What is the biggest goal you want to achieve in 2015?
I think the biggest goal I want to achieve next is to curate my own tour. But that’s looking more like 2016…
Be sure to get your tickets for the show tomorrow here. Ape Drums, Araab Muzik, and A-Trak all together will be a night to remember.
