Apex, part of duo Unknown Error, has reportedly passed away and sources close to him have revealed that his death was as a result of suicide. Kent local Robert Dickeson personified the feeling of home for many drum and bass fans, cemented the definition of this genre in the United Kingdom and provided inspiration to newcomers and rising stars all around the world.
From Unknown Error’s first ever release entering the BBC 1Xtra D&B charts to producing hard-hitting tracks on labels such as Horizons and Renegade Hardware, Apex worked hard to mould the music he created into something unique and for the many. You didn’t need to be a hardcore drum and bass fan to love Apex’s intricate and delicate work and that’s why many dnb fans today can call themselves just that – because of Apex’s magnetism.
Apex’s atmospheric vibes in ‘Space Between’ were second to none and track after track charted on BBC Radio 1 or Beatport; Wall of Sound was a true highlight of his career and saw label Lifted Music he created with Chris Renegade, Spor, Evol Intent, and Ewun gain success with their series of global parties.
Our favourite Apex remixes include Bachelors of Science’s ‘Strings Track’ and London Elektricity’s ‘Just One Second’, both iconic tracks for the early 2000’s and ones that already have a history attached to them. Apex’s most recent work on Mau5trap under his new alias Robert Oaks saw a swift transformation to techno and house, again reiterating his knowledge for UK trends and knowing what kind of music would resonate with electronic fans the most.
‘On The Run’ featured on the Mau5trap ’16 compilation and this summer also saw the release of more music (Coming Home) under another alias – Midnight Lamp, alongside My Shadow, under Robert Oaks.
By the end, Robert Dickeson was a man of many names, but he remained and will forever remain a pioneer within the electronic dance music industry. Let’s remember and celebrate Apex listening and appreciating the works of art that he created.
