This week we head down under to the hottest artist to come out of Australia since Flume, Alex Scholler aka Alison Wonderland. If you were at Coachella this weekend you had the chance to get familiar with her trap-infused beats she threw down on the Sahara Stage on Saturday. She played for a packed crowd that came to see what was up with the hype and for a taste of her refined take on trap.
Growing up in Australia, Alex began learning music on the cello and eventually bass in an indie rock band. She cited The Knife’s album Silent Shout as the catalyst that drove her into producing music on her computer. That was in 2006 and now Scholler is poised to continue gaining ground within the genre with her latest full-length LP Run. After the success of her debut EP Calm Down, fans were eager to see what direction she would take on her sophomore album and with bangers like “I Want You” and “U Don’t Know” the reaction has been overwhelmingly positive.
To her musical project, Alison Wonderland is Scholler’s take on trap with a style that is all her own. There are a few artists in electronic music who provide their own lyrics, but Alison is unrivaled as a vocalist in trap. She providers her own voice and production, and manages to bring elegance to a genre that is characteristically rambunctious. A great example being “Cold” that pairs her polished voice with banging percussion. It’s a song that is both classy and aggressive, which we feel is exemplary of her current thematic vision.
Scholler also had a residency as a Triple J DJ and shows her mixing chops in three Triple J Mixes along with her on point song selection. If we can expect her live show to be similar in skill with her mixes, then we’re all in for a treat at Electric Forest this year. If you’re at Forest we consider this a set you can’t miss, we’ll see you there.
