This week we’re headed to The Golden State to check out what’s good with the West Coast bass scene with G Jones. He (real name Greg Jones) started this musical project in 2012 and has been taking over North America with his special blend of bass powers. Last year he had some highlights on the road with fellow West Coast bass artist Minnesota alongside Jackal and threw down a nasty set at CoSM. This year he’ll be at Lightning In A Bottle and CounterPoint next week and opening up for Bassnectar at Red Rocks at the end of May (drools).
The current state of electronic is constantly evolving, so we’re always on the lookout for the artists that are pushing their respective genres. When it comes to bass heavy beats, we look no further than G Jones. Going back three years to when he started this project, we can see a huge shift in sound occurring over time. Tracks like “Circle Limit” and “The Heart Cave” showcase ambient textures while “Kretek (clip)” gives you a vague framework for the direction he would take with yawning wubs and a slow BPM (100).
Jump forward to stuff released within the last year and we see a very different, yet equally compelling direction for Jones. He’s still difficult to classify genre-wise, as every track is an amalgamation of styles while staying dry under the “bass umbrella.” Listening to “Terminal 3” recalls memories of past Jones work with the fitting #foundations tag on it. If you’re trying to get your shrug on look no further than “Ring The Alarm” which features a chorus of fat horns that’ll get ya going. Lastly, we’d be remiss to not mention his remix of Nectar’s “Don’t Hate the 808” that reworks the drop with his signature bleeps and booming bass.
Jones will be playing Friday at CounterPoint and we’ll be sure to catch his set. Be sure to relax your face beforehand because it’s going to be making lots of strange shapes.
