This week’s Artist Pick of the Week takes us to Slovenia to check out some electro-soul/hip-hop coming from the mind of JK Soul. Of course we’re all familiar with Slovenia’s number one musical export, Gramatik, who has been making music in the electro-soul-hip-hop scene for years. It comes as no surprise that these two artists are friends, and Gramatik is cited as an influence that steered JK away from house and towards the world of hip-hop beat making.
After discovering the world of hip-hop, scratches, and raw beats, JK quickly became known as one of the best scratch-DJs in Europe, accumulating 10 years of experience while performing with Slovenian hip-hop group 5.element. His first album Dinner With the Beatz Vol. 1 was released on The Cold Busted label located in Denver and a tour alongside Gramatik opening for Pretty Lights followed later that year.
Since 2009 JK Soul has been extremely prolific releasing eight more albums Dinner with the Beatz Vol. 2, Shadows, Dinner With FAT Beatz on the label “FAT Sound” which he founded, Universal Love EP, Take Me Higher, The FAT Box, Street Headz! and now most recently When There Is No Sun. If you like what you hear from this spotlight you will certainly not lack for more music by JK.
He’s also done some creative work uniting electronic with live instruments featuring The Bug Orchestra. Check that out below.
As for his latest collection of work, JK Soul is bringing some fierce vibes with his production. When you press play you get a lot of what you bargained for, heavy samples, throwback hip-hop vocals, horns, violin, and the brooding vibes that electro-soul is known for. We’re loving his use of heavy synths and basslines on tracks like “A Bright Light In The Sky”, “There Is A God Somehwere” and “LOVE”. Its very reminiscent of GRiZ on Mad Liberation and we’re loving his fearless approach. Check it out in full below.
