Last week we featured Gravitas owner Psymbionic, who then put us onto some more talent off his label in the form of electro-soul meets hip-hop, Cory Wythe aka Marvel Years. Wythe is a Vermont native who came up on the guitar before making the transition to electronic production. His breakout year came in 2013 when he connected with Pretty Lights to open for a show in Boston and again at Red Rocks later that year. Those two shows really got the ball rolling for Cory and it’s been a wild ride since.
Wythe creates quality electro-soul, utilizing classic hip-hop samples while injecting his own flavor of zippy synths and groovy basslines. His tracks accomplish the goal of electro-soul: to bring the vintage vibes of artists like Nas, Notorious B.I.G, and the Rolling Stones up to the speed of the 21st century.
As with any artist, we love to see diversity and innovation within their production and Marvel Years acheives that. We get smoothness like his recent remix of Krooken Drivers’ track “Drift Away Days” that contrasts with an older original like “Nobody Does It Better” that’s considerably more driven, with a crashing cymbal and fat synth chords. We also love “The East” the first track off his second EP Nowhere But Up.
It’s been a few years since we’ve gotten a full album, but we’ve been satiated with plenty of original singles and stellar remixes. Check em below and for free at his website here. If you like what you heard be sure to check his tour schedule and get out to show some love. We’ll be in the Basement at Webster this weekend you can grab tickets here.
