If you’re a resident of New York City you may be well acquainted with the Brooklynite David Carls (BRANX) who could be mistaken for the city’s own resident DJ, playing dozens of shows across the boroughs in the past few years. This summer he made the rounds playing at Electric Forest, Camp Bisco and Infrasound among other fests. Tomorrow he’ll be hitting the road with friend and former roommate Denis Jasarevic (Gramatik) for all North American stops on Gramatik’s Epigram Fall Tour.
We’ve never been more impressed with BRANX, the glitch and funk curator, than we were at Elements Music & Arts Festival in Brooklyn a few weeks ago. Early in the afternoon he threw a flawless, high energy rocket launcher of a set that made a massive impression on us and the rest of the crowd. Good Looks Collective even chose to feature the BRANX tune “Sauce” in its official recap video for Elements. David’s production skills appeared to be at an all time high, and we had the opportunity to ask him about his music after the set.
He first honed his production skills while composing scores for feature films. After years of keeping close quarters with Denis and the members of Exmag (also his former roommates) David picked up a degree of musicality which he then applied to his superior production skills, finding a potent and well-crafted style as a producer and DJ. Though a large body of his work involves collaboration with the Lowtemp crew, David told us he has over a dozen new tracks of his own ready for release. With the bombshell Epigram tour on deck, however, we suspect we may have to wait for these juicy tunes. For funk fans lucky enough to catch the Epigram tour before it heads overseas BRANX has a handful of surprises in store.
Another top-notch funk act, Lettuce, also tapped BRANX as an opener on the Colorado and San Fransisco stops of their tour. The recognition he’s achieved in the industry and the pure talent he exhibits on stage suggest BRANX may not be opening shows for much longer – he’ll be headlining them. Check out the schedule for the Epigram Tour, and if you plan on attending you best arrive early to catch one of Lowtemp’s brightest stars.
