Last night a while cruising some Facebook groups we came across an awesome artist Stephen Suchan who goes by the name SOOHAN. He is a young producer/DJ coming out of Maryland who just released his debut album Made in Baltimore in December of last year. Since then the album has accumulated over 100,000 SoundCloud plays and attracted a variety of listeners with his unique array of sound.
The first thing that impressed us (besides that didge on “Super Heady Spiritual Gangster”) is SOOHAN’s expert use of sampling and mixing. There are a ton of samples on this album including Ace of Base, Missy Elliot, the emperor from Mulan (on “Savior of China”), The Lion King, ODB “Shimmy Shimmy Ya”, The Drifters, Wyclef Jean, Corona, Native American vocals, and Dr. Dre though I know I’m still missing a few.
Throughout the album he’s throwing around samples like cafeteria school lunches in a food fight. A lot of his sample selection is rather dated, coming from 90’s and before yet he manages to bring them into the 21st century with bouncy basslines and snappy percussion. The result is a nostalgic emotion coupled with the urge to move around and dance.
Check out Made in Baltimore below and be sure to check out his freshly released tour schedule! SOOHAN coming to a venue near you.
