One of the great things about the BBC Radio 1 Residency is that the stable of artists that are featured offer variety in many ways. Not only are many different genres represented by the eight deejays, but artists of different statures and fame are represented as well. Today, we’re profiling easily the biggest name of the series, Artwork.
He broke onto the scene blowing up the garage scene in the late 90’s and early 2000’s. While working for a long time at the legendary Big Apple record store in Croydon, he met two precocious young artists named Skream and Benga. Together they formed the first and last(?) dubstep supergroup called Magnetic Man. Magnetic Man lit the world on fire from 2008 to 2013. They brought dubstep out of dark and dingy clubs in England to the main stage at festivals all around the world. They introduced the masses to this new sound, which caused the genre to explode in popularity, and some say, ultimately lead to its demise in the United States.
Even though his influence was colossal in bass-heavy genres such as garage and dubstep, his production and deejaying prowess straddles many sounds. Under the Grain moniker, he has released techno played by the likes of Richie Hawtin. His latest release, “Let Go Of This Acid” is a hard hitting acid house record.
His take on the residency is unique and a bit offbeat. His background as a record store employee is on full display as he digs deep with a collection of crate-digging disco and house. The funk is apparent, and the grooves are made to uplift your soul and put a smile on your face.
He also is by far the freest with the term “radio show” and uses his time to liven up the hour with meandering stories with his friends. It’s an interesting listen and something just a little bit different.
The Residency seems to always try to include a big name as one of the rotating cast members. In this go-round we have the pleasure of spending time with someone who embodies the sounds and variety of music in the UK. Enjoy.
