The second artist we’ll be featuring in this series is The Black Madonna. She has shared the decks with Chicago house legends Frankie Knuckles and Derrick Carter. But The Black Madonna a legend in her own rite.
Even though she has poured her heart and soul into Smart Bar in the North Side of Chicago, she is no stranger to the world stage. She has brought her distinct mix of soulful house and bumping techno all over the world including revered club Berghain. Her sound is eclectic, and her attitude is one of a kind. She’s on a mission to throw a wrench into dance music and bring it back to where it started. She wants to give it back to the weird and the different, to those that sought out dance music as an escape from their persecutions and their troubles.
Her residency harkens back to her roots as she seeks to educate listeners, as well as move them. She starts off her show “Digging in the crates”, with disco and funk hits taking center stage. But in the act of connecting Past To Present, she shows off some newer Chicago house to bring it full circle. Her commentary adds to the whole House Education vibe and gives the listener a peek into the mind of someone who knows firsthand where the house scene came from.
Her residency needs to be listened to in full to be truly appreciated, as only someone with The Black Madonna’s credentials can weave together decades of music so seamlessly.
The contrast between the two artists featured is massive and is only one of the reasons that we love the BBC Radio 1 Residency so much.
